“Great apartments”
Reviewed September 5, 2010

The room was very clean and the cleaning ladies very helpful and nice, they make a very sweet bed for my baby boy.
You have to ask for a room wiht air conditionning, not all room have it.
The restaurant "a Nora Velha" is GREAT, very nice personel and the food is very very good and not too expansive.
The pool is great but can be a little bit small when the apartments are all rented.
Great vacations.

This was our second trip to Tavira and we again stayed at the Monte da Eira apartments. We were two couples and the layout was ideal with two beds two baths and a kitchenette/lounge and two balconies. Air con is essential in the summer months. The large warm pool was a few steps away as was the round bar which was frequented by locals. Always a good sign! If you want roast beef, sports bars, nightclubs and kareoke then do not come here, if you want a charming old roman town with a very Portuguese atmosphere and good sea food restaurants then do come! I would describe the town as shabby chic built on both sides of a lovely river. The reception office will call a taxi which costs 4 Euro to town or it can be walked in 20 mins. Forget high heels as everywhere here is cobbled. We were here for the festival of San Juan on 25th June which was celebrated for 3/4 days, everywhere was decorated with paper flowers and there was live bands playing by the river all evening and fireworks it was lovely to be amongst local people dancing and celebrating like that.
There is a new large shopping mall near the apartments which has every shop you could want. The island of Tavira is worth visiting as it's stunning beach and fresh fish are well worth getting the ferry to spend the day there, it costs 1.80 Euro return. There is an excellent beach a five/ ten minute drive away called Mante Rota. I would say a car is essential here as the Spanish border is only 35 K away and the roads are very good for exploring the Algarve coast. Having done this we were glad to be returning to lovely Tavira.

We booked Qunito do Morgado as we had been in Alvor during our last stay in Portugal and wanted to try something different. We were very happy with our choice. The hotel is quite lovely. We were upgraded to a two bedroom apartment which was very well appointed and quite large. Two bedrooms, two baths, full kitchen, dining room, living room and large balcony with table for 6.
As with our last stay in Portugal, no spatula, egg flipper was available. I thought this may be the case so brought one from home and was glad to have it. It made flipping eggs much easier than with a slotted spoon.
The city/village of Tavira is perfectly lovely. It was a 5 minute walk to the large mall with grocery store or 20 minute walk to the centre of Tavira itself. When we did not feel like travelling to the surrounding cities, we would wander downtown and send emails from the free internet service at the public library. We also found a laundramat on the canal which was 2.50 euros vs 4.00 euros at the Hotel.
Spain was a 15 minute drive from Tavira and we found the gas to be 0.30 euro cheaper in Spain than Portugal.
The mini preco at the entrance of the Hotel had some of the best grocery prices around and carried all that you needed (even a meat counter at the back) if you were planning on making some of your own meals.

All in all a lovely trip. Tavira was a great (although quiet) place to be and very different from the Alvor. If you are looking for lots to do and lots of restaurants to wander around to, then Alvor would be my first recommendation. If you have a car and do not mind the quiet, Tavira is great

Quinta do Morgado

We were very suspicious about the “package” offered by JM Vacations because of the low cost and, when we decided to opt for it, we set our expectations quite low! In discussion with friends and family, the observation was that “if it appears to be too good to be true, it likely will be” … it turned out to be one of those unique situations where our expectations were considerably exceeded!

Our package was for 2 weeks, departing Canada on October 11’th … thanks to advise on this forum, we requested an Apartment within the new buildings: JM said that they would ask for an upper level apartment: we ended up being upgraded to a relatively large 2 bedroom/2 bathroom Apartment unit on the top floor, in the newest part of this complex, facing south so that we had full sun on the spacious balcony from day break until sun set! Our Apartment overlooked a huge pool surrounded by palm trees. This probably was possible because there were very few people there, so it was very quiet. During our stay the weather was, for the most part, clear and comfortably warm (highs in the mid-20’s Fahrenheit) … we had one cold day and one when it rained a bit. The Apartment was equipped with modern appliances, was very clean and comfortable.

Concern about the Air Transat flight there was unwarranted … we paid $20 extra per person each way for window/isle seating together and found that there was way more leg room than we had anticipated. Picking up the rental car in Faro was the mob scene that we had expected with so many passengers lining up at the same rental counter but, as the flight arrived quite early in the morning, this did not take away any valuable vacation time. The rental car was a Chevrolet Matiz and was the smallest car that I have ever driven anywhere but I managed to find the various peddles with my big feet and the car was extremely economical to drive (fill up your tank with gas in Spain if you stay in Tavira as there are gas stations just over the International Bridge which is very close to the Quinta).

We are of an age where night life consists of “early to bed” … if you are looking for night activities, Tavira is probably not for you … nor would it be should you want crowds of people with which to mingle! The cobbled streets of this charming City are great for exploration and, of course, Tavira is one of those unique places on the Algarve that is not wildly over developed. The pool in the complex, at this time of year is quite cool but the Atlantic off Ilha de Tavira is relatively warm with clear water over a sandy bottom and the beach seems to go on forever. We enjoyed frequent drives into the countryside, over to Spain for tapas and shopping, checking out the salt pans for Flamingos and other unique birds, hiking and especially lunches out (try not to miss Bica on the north side of the River Gilao in Tavira … although I am allergic to shellfish, Sally had what she claimed was the best prawn meal ever). The best place presently to go to for a bulk shop (food and wine) happened to be the Continente Hipermercado on EN 125 (outskirts of Albufeira) … a distance to travel for this from Tavira, but we think worth the effort. Another option would be to find the Hipercor in Huelva, Spain … part of the excellent El Corte Ingles chain (awkward to find but well worth the effort, we think). The local public market is naturally best for fresh daily produce.

When we encountered a few problems understanding the modern conveniences in the Apartment, help was on it’s way immediately. JM scheduled a local representative to meet with us the day after arrival and she was extremely helpful with lot’s of excellent advise … she also booked a Guadiana River Cruise for us which we enjoyed very much.

In summary, this vacation package was exceptional for a couple who normally work out our travel plans independently … we can recommend JM very highly! If we return to Portugal (and we have been there before this trip), we will undoubtedly book through them: perhaps at a complex directly on the Ocean but not at one of those many ugly high rise developments that choke up much of the coastline beauty (we did discover Salema, a small underdeveloped fishing village in the western Algarve for a winter vacation a couple of years ago) … Quinta do Morgado from our lovely Apartment was ideal for 2 weeks but probably would be confining for a longer stay: the property overall is relatively low rise but somewhat densely developed and, although beautifully maintained, obviously lacks one of the feature attractions of the Algarve, an unobstructed view of the sea.

We stayed in the newer section of the resort while travelling with our toddler daughter.

The resort was perfect for her. Both pools have a paddeling pool for little children and there were other kids around for her to play with. By the end of our stay in mid-October although the days were warm, the pool was VERY cold as there was no water heater. There was also a little playground available for her to use.

The receiption staff was friendly and spoke English very well. They upgraded us to a two bedroom apartment (which was very helpful travelling with my daughter).

Tariva itself is an authentic quiet little fishing village.

The beaches are a bit of a way away. We particularly liked Monte Gordo, which was about a 20-30 minute drive towards Spain. We felt that travelling to a beach on a boat (Isle de Tariva) or on a bridge and land train was too much bother as my daughter being a toddler was only happy on the beach for 2-3 hours a day.

If you are considering staying here for a beach vacation a rental car is a MUST.

I found the kitchen to be lacking in several things (veggie peeler, strainer, and spatula) to name a few.

We also found that the laundry facilities were rather expensive (4 euro for a wash / dry). This could be important to know if you are staying a long while -as we did- and are travelling with young children.

Overall the gardens were beautiful and the accomodation was clean, spacious and pleasing.

Stayed here in August 07 with my partner. Good job we both love the sun as there was nothing else to do here. The facilities are not there to cater for tourists. The town of Tavira is lovely, however a 15 minute stop over on a day trip to somewhere would cover all there is to see here. Not a lot of resturants or pubs here and no shopping at all. Street entertainment at night was good for the week we were there. We are so glad we did not bring our 2 teenage boys with us on this trip or we would definately be home early as there is absolutely nothing to do for them here. The beach is a taxi & ferry ride away, no thanks. If the pool ares if full its tough luck. It was fine as we just wanted a peaceful break away from it all however we would not return here for at least 10 years any maybe they will have a supermarket built by then!

We just loved this place. We had a lovely apartment with a balcony looking out over the old olive trees in the grounds. The grounds were beautifully maintained with flowering trees and shrubs everywhere. There were four swimming pools. There are two separate sections to this complex - ask to be put into the new one. The complex has a bar which serves lunch items and snacks and a full restaurant if you don't wish to eat in your apartment. The apartment itself consisted of a living/diningroom. We had tv with satellite. There is a kitchenette with hot plates, mircrowave/grill, good sized fridge and freezer. There are basic saucepans, utensils provided. When we arrived there were oranges and a fresh loaf of bread to greet us. The bedroom has two single beds and plenty of storage space. Nice bathroom with bathtub, shower, and bidet. North Americans - there is no hairdryer provided, but I asked for one and was lent one for the whole stay. Friendly staff were helpful. The complex is close to Tavira which is a lovely town to visit as it has a genuine portugese flavour - caters to tourist while not having a 'touristy' feel. We highly recommend this hotel and the town of Tavira. The eastern Algarve is much quieter than the western end. The beaches at Tavira are reached by a short ferrry trip as they are on the barrier islands which front the coastline in this area.
