“Absolute Bliss”
Reviewed October 16, 2013

Stayed for 4 nights as part of a wedding party - already planning to return with my partner and then on a "girlie" weekend.
The building is stunning - a mediaeval convent so comes complete with cloisters and baroque staircase. There is even an archeological site accessible from the bar. Outdoor pool is set against a backdrop of part of the ruins. Stayed in room 31 which is at back of property looking out at church of S.Maria (N.B. bells ring every hour.)
Breakfast, which is buffet-style, can be eaten under cloisters or inside. On offer is a full range of food from continental cheese/meats to hot full(ish) English. Special mention of Susana who was smiling at breakfast and still smiling 12 hours later.
Location of the Pousada could not be better - two steps from the castle ruins, church of S.Maria and the old water tower which is now a camera oscura where you can view the town in a 15 minute presentation.
The overall feeling of this hotel is one of absolute tranquility.

Like other reviewers I found the scruffy state of the furniture and the 'black round the bath seal' unacceptable for what should be 1st class hotel. Breakfast was reasonably good but exactly the same every day - and after 6 days we needed both a bit of variety and a decent toaster!
The lack of staff was evident at times too. We were totally ignored during one breakfast service and really did have to help ourselves and pile up the plates. It is a shame and one hopes that improvements will ensure this is the place to stay in Tavira as it really seems to have little competition if you want to be within walking distance of everything and have such a lovely pool.

Room Tip: No view from room 12 but quiet.

We have stayed at many Pousadas over the years, this was our first bad experience. The Town in delightful as is the Barrier Beach but the Posada left a great deal to be desired, especially in the area of service. We found the staffing level well below what was required and that any of the staff were not properly trained. The original convent is lovely and the new addition is well rendered but a it dark and dismal with fairly low quality furnishings except for the bathroom. If the weather is good there is adequate public space but we experienced rain and there was little public space and only limited seating indoors: the grounds are lovely but totally open to the weather.

The Friday we arrived there was a large wedding going on. It had been planned for an outdoor ceremony but the staff was frantically trying to move it indoors at the last minute although it had been raining all afternoon and the forecast was for continued rain all evening. The understaffed bar was overcrowded with wedding guests. We decided to stay in the hotel for dinner and were treated to a 45 minute wait for wine: there was one waitperson in the dinning room and about 8 tables had entered simultaneously. She tried but there was general dissatisfaction because of the wait.

I could go on with more detail but suffice it to say that there was a serious service problem that seemed to go beyond the fact that they were trying to host w wedding reception.

Our second stay in 2 years started on the wrong foot. We had booked a superior room for 8 nights and got a nice large room at the front of the pousada (room 2).
Checking in we received a "voucher" with a value of 25€ pp for the pousad restaurant (which we recognise as a good but expensive retaurant). When we asked for the bill it seemed that the "voucher" was in fact just a 4,5€ reduction on the menu price of 30€.
we did not dine again at the restaurant.
The pousada is a very beautiful building, the pool facilities are nice although a bit crowded some times. The beautifull wood floor of our room was scratched deeply (by moving furniture?), the rugwas very stained and the bath taps and silicone sealing are inbig need of replacement.
We will not return, but certaily go back to tavira

Room Tip: Room is a very nice standaard room, room 2 is a beuatiful superior room but the bathtub has to be re...

The pousada fully lives up to its billing of blending history and modernity. The hotel has a very tranquil atmosphere (apart from the ill chosen choice of breakfast music) which makes it very relaxing. We were very fortunate to have our own terrace overlooking the pool and gardens which are well maintained. The hotel has an excellent location being in a very historic quarter of Tavira and a short walk to the town centre.
The staff were very welcoming and friendly with notably good restaurant service, especially from the ever smiling Susanna. The food was good value and high quality.
I cannot imagine there is a nicer place to stay in Tavira.

In Portuguese a Pousada is actually an Inn but don't be fooled this is a 16th century baroque and renaissance building now of a course a luxury hotel. Enough breakfast high quality fuel to sink a ship and very attentive professional staff. The pool area is perfect and peaceful and the setting far enough on the edge of he's all town for added peace. Highly recommened.

We stayed at the Pousada in Tavira for the first week in July. It is a beautiful hotel. I completely agree with the comments regarding the excellent staff. The reception staff were so friendly, professional and helpful and they remembered our names! Our room and bathroom was very comfortable and the small balcony is a lovely place to sit and read. The breakfast was absolutely delicious and there was a great choice of food; fresh fruit kebabs, pastries, cold meats and cheeses plus hot dishes and freshly-squeezed juice; the waiters remembered after the first day that we liked a pot of coffee and hot milk. We ate out for all our evening meals as the restaurant appeared a little formal and I like somewhere with a bit more atmosphere.

The comments about the children doesn't surprise me; I did find it very quiet and people didn't really chat to one another, breakfast time was rather 'reverential'. Personally I enjoyed it when there were a few children playing in the pool as even when reading it is pleasant to hear the chatter of children having fun. Plus as there is actually a children's pool, it seems a shame that children were asked to be quiet by other guests!

Tavira is a delightful town and it was lovely to potter down into the main square and eat a delicious icecream by the bandstand listening to the local musicians playing.

Altogether I would highly both the hotel and Tavira. I certainly hope to return.
