Thirty years ago I stayed at the then excellent Pousada d'Infanta in Sagres.
Returning to the Algarve with my wife who is a wheelchair user and unable to walk, I thought it would be good to try a different Pousada; it proved to be very, very different indeed from the one I had experienced in 1978.
Although the original old Convent building is beautiful, a quite horrible extension and outdoor swimming pool has been added.
More distressingly the decor throughout the hotel lacks any subtelty or flair - the pictures in the bedrooms are standard 'bought by the square metre' daubs, the curtains ugly and some of the 'historic objects' in the corridors cheap reproductions.
Even the lovely cloister is marred by a ghastly statue and surrounding pool that looks as if it has been transplanted from a municipal swimming bath.
The (rightly deserted) Bar is uncomfortable & drab and very poorly stocked with not one local brandy or liqueur.
Worst of all, however, is the breakfast which is truly grim. The room where it is served is dark and drab, which may be designed to mask the frightfulness of the 'buffet' - fatty sausages, tomato halves and the horrific congealed mess that passes for scrambled eggs.
Only one heating element of the 'do it yourself toaster' works - so even toast is unattainable. The the coffee - from an urn - is luke warm, brackish and offensive.
There are almost no staff. A two star hotel in Vienna would be ashamed of such a deplorable level of service. Having reeled away on the first morning we decided not to risk dinner and took ourselves to local cafes and restarants, thereafter.
Overall, I found this place pretentious and dispiriting - Pousadas were a lovely concept but this one, at least, has all the hall marks of 'crass corporate blight' at its very worst. It represents possibly the worst value for money that I have found in Eurpe in the last few tears - and that includes some ghastly stays in London.
