Pousada Convento Tavira
Ranked #2 of 15 Hotels in Tavira
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed November 7, 2012

Thirty years ago I stayed at the then excellent Pousada d'Infanta in Sagres.
Returning to the Algarve with my wife who is a wheelchair user and unable to walk, I thought it would be good to try a different Pousada; it proved to be very, very different indeed from the one I had experienced in 1978.
Although the original old Convent building is beautiful, a quite horrible extension and outdoor swimming pool has been added.
More distressingly the decor throughout the hotel lacks any subtelty or flair - the pictures in the bedrooms are standard 'bought by the square metre' daubs, the curtains ugly and some of the 'historic objects' in the corridors cheap reproductions.
Even the lovely cloister is marred by a ghastly statue and surrounding pool that looks as if it has been transplanted from a municipal swimming bath.
The (rightly deserted) Bar is uncomfortable & drab and very poorly stocked with not one local brandy or liqueur.
Worst of all, however, is the breakfast which is truly grim. The room where it is served is dark and drab, which may be designed to mask the frightfulness of the 'buffet' - fatty sausages, tomato halves and the horrific congealed mess that passes for scrambled eggs.
Only one heating element of the 'do it yourself toaster' works - so even toast is unattainable. The the coffee - from an urn - is luke warm, brackish and offensive.
There are almost no staff. A two star hotel in Vienna would be ashamed of such a deplorable level of service. Having reeled away on the first morning we decided not to risk dinner and took ourselves to local cafes and restarants, thereafter.
Overall, I found this place pretentious and dispiriting - Pousadas were a lovely concept but this one, at least, has all the hall marks of 'crass corporate blight' at its very worst. It represents possibly the worst value for money that I have found in Eurpe in the last few tears - and that includes some ghastly stays in London.

The hotel has a perfect location in old Tavira and has been beautifully restored.
The inner yard with fountain and yellow walls is fantastic.
Wonderful pool area and excellent breakfast.
The hotel service was also very good.
Room 7 and 8 have pool view.

Stunningly restored from a convent to a hotel with rooms with all the modern conveniences you could ask for. Breakfast was slightly disappointing particularly the presentation of the buffet. Staff went out of their way to help. Double room that was booked was in fact two singles pushed together.

We stayed just one night at this beautiful hotel.
The staff were wonderful - nothing was too much trouble. The restaurant was superb, with lovely surroundings. At the airport I found I had lost my IPad. I rang the hotel to check if it was there and the reception immediately remembered me and had already sent me an email to say I had left it in my room.. I was so impressed by their honesty and organisation. I cannot recommend this hotel too highly, for a few days in a lovely area.

The building was originally a convent, the conversion of the historic building has been done very well and both the common areas and the rooms are impressive. The free parking is well hidden by greenery and the swimming pool doesn't look wrong in the garden.

The staff at the reception has been very polite but the check in was not very rapid and they indulged too much in explaining a kind of survey to name the best employe in the hotel chain. Nothing upsetting but considering it was already late and I was staying for just one night they could have avoided it.

The room was large, comfortable and tastefully decorated but on the shelves in the closet there was a thick layer of dust, something I didn't expected.

After dinner I went to the bar to have a drink, but there was no barman, I had to wait minutes to see him appearing.

The breakfast was very good and served outside too, in the middle of the cloister of the old convent, a suggestive ambient.

I booked directly on the hotel site. The price is commensurate with the charm and luxury of the building but the service and cleanliness of the rooms should be improved.

This is the most beautiful place I think we've stayed in. It's been restored to such a high standard. We had a standard twin room and it looked out over the pool and gardens. The inner courtyard is beautiful, as is the architecture. The staff are fantastic - very polite and helpful and hard working. They are very proud of this hotel, as they should be. Our every need was met. Breakfast is fantastic, a buffet, from scrambled eggs & bacon to cakes, breads, fruit, hams, cheeses and cereal. Wonderful! It has the most relaxed atmosphere here. Chilled!
Never an issue with sunbeds, on our busiest day, there were 8 people round the pool. The pool is a great size and area is immaculate. Lunch was served for us on tables round pool and every need was catered for. We stayed for 5 nights and next time we'll stay for longer. I had cocktails mixed for me by the barman, he asked me what I liked and then out came these fantastic drinks! The hotel and area is steeped in history and I recommend buying the book from reception, about the Pousada, before and after it was renovated. Tavira is a great place, good shops and restaurants. Fantastic fish and seafood. People are very friendly and you feel safe. I would recommend this to couples or families, in fact everyone. Cobbled streets everywhere, don't bother taking heels, I never wore my wedges once! I brought 3 pairs of sandals which cost me 17 euros!!

Room Tip: Rooms 7 & 8 overlook the pool & gardens. But there are fantastic suites and superior rooms a...
