We have visited Pousada da Convento Da Graca several times in the last year in preparation for our wedding at the start of September. We absolutely love it, the cloisters is exactly what we were looking for and the location in the centre of the beautiful, uncommercialised town of Tavira is fantastic. We have not stayed there yet but we did sample the food. Contrary to previous reviews we were delighted with it. The food and wine were both excellent as was the service. Nothing was too much trouble and we are really looking forward to returning in a couple of months.

We stayed in Tavira for five days at the Pousada, in a two bedroom suite with a small garden. We adored Tavira, particularly the beach. The hotel was ok, but we felt they did not maximize the potential of this elegant property. The location and restored convent are lovely, but the service was uninspired (other than a couple of helpful members of the front desk staff), the decor was dull, the bar and lounge were cramped and dark, the "museum" was inaccessible, and the pool area was plain with poor seating areas. Worst of all, we found the restaurant truly awful. Unfortunately we ate there on our first night and spent more than double of any other restaurant in Spain or Portugal during a two and a half week holiday, and the food was REALLY bad. For example although they advertised local ingredients, both the fish and shrimp were frozen and rubbery. As a final insult, throughout our stay all the orange juice served in the small breakfast buffet was from concentrate! We couldn't walk down the street in Spain or Portugal without tripping over an orange tree, and every other restaurant we went to, from the most lowly beachside grill to five star hotels, served only fresh orange juice. Except this one. In all this was a calm, quiet hotel, full of elderly British tourists, who seemed to enjoy it. For us it was fine, but not memorable. We will not return.

Pousada da Convento Da Graca, is a large and imposing hotel, easy to reach from the main road from Tavira to Faro in the old town. It has a modern feel even tough it was once an Augustinian Monastery. It is very quiet and comfortable. The standard of decor is high. There is a swimming pool and bars and restaurant. Car parking is secure and Wi-Fi is available. Staff were friendly and helpful. It is located within easy walking distance of main attractions.

This was a return visit after some 3 years and on this occasion we had our 14 year old Grandaughter with us. We stayed longer than most guests - a week.
Before I go further let me say that the staff from top to bottom were excellent - a credit to the Portuguese hospitality industry- they could not have been more helpful.
One of the big advantages is that you can book without a deposit with no loss if the reservation is cancelled within a couple of days of arrival. My advice is to book direct with the Pousada- they have all sorts of promotions. You cannot reserve a particular room but the staff do their best to see you get what you want. We had a suite and our Grandaughter a standard room next door. We thought about our Grandaughter sharing our room but quite honestly you have to be pretty desperate to go down that route - even in a suite - it just would not be on - although allowable at a supplement. I thought the standard room was good - all that was wanted really. Our room called the mezzanine suite was poor for a suite ( and the only suite without a 'suite name' on the door) - I think it had been uprated from a superior room. On our previous visit we had the special suite which was excellent. A problem with our room was that 'we had a drains smell' especially if the bathroom door was kept closed at night - I think the drains need a deep clean.
The big advantage for us is that I did not want to hire a car ( too nervous to drive my Grandaughter around) and the Pousada is about 40euros from Faro Airport and 10 euros from 2 excellent golf courses. In addition Tavira is a lovely Town with one of the best beaches I have ever seen a short taxi drive/ferry away. There a numerous good restaurants in the town including the Pousada restaurant that I will review seperately and compare with some other restaurants visited. We also took a train to Villa Real on the Spanish border - well worth a visit with a lovely Port and shops.
To summarise - a good holiday and a location where you don't need a car.

We loved our stay here in this elegant and peaceful converted convent. Our room was spacious and comfortable and there were lots of pleasant areas to sit and relax either in the charming courtyard, round the pool or in the large bar/lounge area. Breakfast was included in our package and ehere was lots of choice.

This was our second visit to Tavira and it's a perfect unspoilt little town for a peaceful few days. I recommend the fresh fish at "Bica" across the river and the little cafe "Tavira Romana " on the main square is excellent for drinks, cakes and ice creams later in the evening when a lot of other places are closed.
