“Nice clean hotel - staff friendly”
Reviewed October 17, 2012

We arrived from Ireland on 09th October 2012 around 11AM - whilst our room was not yet available the receptionist was very welcoming and took our bags into the "hold room" also allowing both myself and my partner the time to change into some clothes more akin to the weather in Tavira (very warm)!! We duly collected our room keys later only to find that the key reader in the room didn't work. However after contacting the receptionist the hotel manager promptly arrived and duly arranged for another room. Within minutes of this the manager had sent up some refreshments to our room by way of an apology (which was most appreciated). I have to say that this was the only "blip" on our stay. The overall attitude of the staff was excellent and the buffet breakfast was excellent. There was a varied and wide slection of cereals, cold meats, cheeses, hot food and beverages. In addition there were ample sun loungers and the location to the centre of the town is excellent. The hotel runs a shuttle service to it's sister hotel enabling guests to avail of the the ferry to Tavira beach. We would definately recommend this hotel and will have no hesitation in staying at this hotel in the near future.

Room Tip: If you like the evening sun then a room facing the south side affords you the "extra rays"...

A good hotel with all the facilities you would require - good pool, pleasant and helpful staff, bar, great breakfast, room fridge.
The main issue was the poor acoustics in the hotel and the echo of every door closing, shower running and toilet flushing resonating - pretty annoying when the hotel was packed with golfers and SAGA holiday guests who were up from 7am and had no consideration for those who might be enjoying (or trying to) a lie in!
Avoid the rooms at the start of each corridor and those above the pool bar

Room Tip: avoid the start of a corridor as all the early morning risers walk past your room and are not quiet

I went with a bunch of golfers and the hotel was more than adequate. Comfortable large double rooms for single guys. Helpful receptionist. Breakfast buffet was substantial and kept us going for the days golf. Bar stayed open late and the pool was large with comfortable sun beds. The hotel is modern; not luxurious but quite acceptable.
Tavira is a traditional town which has not yet been overly commercialised. It is a short walk to the charming cobbled square and the old bridge. Walk over the old bridge and there is a selection of interesting restauarants; I recommend Bicar.

We wanted to stay at the Hotel Porta Nova but it was full, so went for the Vila Gale for 2 nights. We hadn't booked as we didn't expect to be here so soon. I thought the hotel was lovely, I asked for a room overlooking the fish market and river, as I didn't think the upgrade was worth the extra money. It was a bit noisy in the mornings but it got me out of bed. The Pool area was very relaxing but there was some scum on the water. I didn't go in. I was aware of the other facilities when we booked in but just wanted to relax, read and update my blog which with the free wifi in the reception area was possible, but you had to pay extra if you wanted wifi in the room (a rip-off). Beds were clean, comfortable and the breakfast was great.

We have been to Tavira countless times as we have friends who have a villa here in the mountains who visit frequently. The town is what the town is. 20 years ago it was very different and not as nice as it is now. I actually found the tiles on the pavements impossible to wear any kind of heels as they have completely renovated the streets with them over the years. Tavira is great - there are now alot of English people visiting, so please do not ruin it by demanding English food. Stay at home if you don't like the food !

Room Tip: Only upgrade the room if you are going to stay in it all day every day !

My wife and spent two nights at this hotel and enjoyed a very relaxing experience. The room was clean and comfortable and the air conditioning very good indeed. The breakfast buffet at the hotel was excellent every morning, but we did not eat lunch or dinner there. That was because it's an easy walk into the town where there is a good choice of restaurants offering varied cuisine. The boat quay is also very nearby and there are some very good seafood restaurants to choose from along the waterfront. The hotel has a lovely outdoor pool as well as a warm indoor pool with spa facilities. Tavira itself is a little run-down and has certainly seen better days. But it is nevertheless worthwhile exploring and giving a little support to the local economy.

Just returned from one week in Vila Gale Tavira. First impression of Tavira was daunting, house wall paint peeling, exposed stone and a bit run-doiwn in places. However the Hotel is on flat land near the river (3mins) and salt pans, and 5/6 minutes walk into town. (take the circular but outside the hotel to see some of the more modern parts of Tavira) This NOT the place for a lively holiday, but if you like wandering around winding cobbled streets, a fruit, veg and fish market at the back of the Hotel, great photo material, taking the ferry to Ilha Tavira (sand, sand-dunes and wooded areas) with few touristy shops - its for you. Plenty of places to eat out so maybe bed and breakfast might be a better option for some.
The hotel itself is 3 storied, built on 4 sides around the pool. Sunbeds always available and - no reserving -(other hotels please note) Good outdoor pool, (indoor one warm, with jacuzzi and beds for lounging, but needs a little updating. - however had it to myself for a while - heavenly Great varied breakfast, for all tastes, - evening meal - not to my taste, but cold meats and salad always available and soups were good. Dessert has "cakes" mousse and very good ice creams.
Reception staff very helpfull. Not much evening entertainment. Singer/guitarist was the best.
Niggles. My room overlooked the drive-in petrol station which doesn't get the sun. Yes it is 11Euro's to upgrade as a single supplement payer I am not impressed with this. However it was fairly quiet, clean, TV channels just updated. No tea/coffee in room. (a free 1 cup a day voucher would be nice, as bar costs are expensive) If you travel with Saga you have free coffee/tea and biscuit most of the day. Thanks.previous reviewer I got the fresh squeezed orange from the shop at the rear for 1or 2.25 euros. (large bottle)
PlEASE stop the restaurant staff from instantly removing the spare place setting for single use - sometimes there is another single person who will join you, and it makes you feel isolated. The restaurant staff dont smile, but are efficient. If I returned to Tavira I would stay at Vila Gale again.

Room Tip: Try to book a room overlooking pool

a lovely small hotel that has what you need: it's clean, efficient, friendly. didn't eat dinner there because a few said it was just ok, and the location is terrific: you can walk to the pretty and safe town in five minutes and choose from dozens of great restaurants. beds were comfortable, bathroom big, aircon worked well once we'd had the filters changed. during breaks, school children a bit noisy at pool on a few days, but mostly it was quiet - and definitely very quiet after 6pm, so having a pool view is lovely. we met lots of people who have gone there a number of times, and we can understand why.

Room Tip: in addition to the pool view, we asked not to be on the ground floor due to pool activity and noise...
