A Barquinha had been recommended to me many times over the years by local friends and I guess the reason I had never got round to a visit before is because it's located smack bang in the middle of the "tourist strip" in Tavira (I exaggerate slightly - there are five or so restaurants with waiters outside urging you to come in and try their food which is not really the vibe we are looking for in Tavira).

We wandered in around 8.30pm on a breezy Monday evening and politely declined the offer of one of the three or four outside tables and took our pick of the tables inside. The interior decor is plain and simple - typical of the old school Portuguese restaurant style that you will find all over town.

We ordered the mixed seafood rice as soon as we sat down which was a good idea as it takes over 30 minutes to cook and the restaurant was quickly filling up around us - it's the kind of dish which is not available when the kitchen is working flat out. At weekends and during the "season" I'd reserve a table in advance as A Barquincha is obviously popular with both the tourists and locals.

Unlike many restaurants in Tavira at A Barquinha you are asked if you would like the couvert of bread, olives and tuna pâté. The bread here is good; fresh with a nice texture and flavour.

While waiting for the main dish we shared a portion of the house salad which is slightly different to one listed on the menu - there has been a very sensible substitution of avocado for mushrooms. The salad was a nice selection of ingredients in a very tasty dressing. A couple on the next table had a salad which included fruit; it looked very appealing and would no doubt make a fine summer lunch dish.

Our seafood rice came in the traditional large clay pot and was enough to feed at least three hungry folk. While not the best example of this dish I have ever had it was still quite tasty with plenty of prawns, clams and monkfish. For me it could have done without the mussels and crab sticks which detracted a bit from the flavour.

We washed our food down with a nice bottle of planalto which was well chilled and not overly expensive at €12.50.

A complimentary small glass of port was provided to sweeten the bill.

A small family run place, where they serve nice and fresh fish and sea food. The owner was very attentative and the food good and fresh and the place not very touristic compared to its neighbours.

Came here 14 years ago and had the tuna steak with potatoes and onions. Inspired me to do this dish when I was back home. Came back last night, got here early(19.30) as they opened at 19.00. We managed to get the last two seats. The owner is so friendly and made everyone there welcome, obviously knowing some returning customers. We opted for couverts. Wrong choice. It was that good. Great bread, never ending bowl of green and black olives and the sardinha pâté. Had also spotted the salads so asked for a mixed salad to have with the tuna steaks. Wrong choice number 2. It arrived before and it was a meal in itself. The tuna steaks arrived with small lightly fried patatas, sweet caremalised onions with a big slice of lemon. Tuck in.
Half an hour later we were bursting and couldn't manage her home-made chocolate pud. We were generously offered ports but they wouldn't fit in!
When we where eating we noticed loads of people trying to spot a free table but to no avail. Next door tries hard to oick up the people who can't get in Barquinha and manage to succeed with some if them. Atmosphere is good between the restaurants though.
The only thing that stops me giving it 5 stars is that it is next to the road, and although its not too busy, if a car goes past with a dodgy exhaust then you are well aware of it. Maybe Perspex screens on the kerb side?
Anyway, great price, lovely atmosphere and much better than a loungey- chill out one on the river( which shall not be named) to which we had been the night before. It was like being in a Portuguese Fawlty Towers. Couldn't wait to leave.
Well done Barquinha.

A Barquinha was highly recommended by a friend who lives in a nearby town and I'm glad we followed her advice. We ate on the small terrace looking towards the Ria Formosa that flows through Tavira. Service was friendly if a little bit slow, but the food was really superb and worth the wait. A local couple on a table nearby also believed that A Barquinha was possibly one of the best option in town. There are best locations in town, near the old bridge for instance, but food, I believe, is essentially what you eat, not always what you watch... and to make things even better, the final bill was more than reasonable.
