Just returned from our 3rd Golf trip to Tavira staying at the Porta Nova Hotel. Just across the road is Guerreiros the best restaurant in town. We were 12 strong and ate here for 3 out of a possible 5 days. Our host comes from his kitchen to show you his best fillet steaks and his marvellous fish (sole is exceptional) to help you choose .The steaks are served on a "hot stone" and you get kitted out with a Bib to preserve your shirt front. We had different starters each day "Clams" "Prawns" and "Shrimps" all done in the tastiest sauce; these were accompanied with cheese bread and pate. House wine is very inexpensive and suited all 12 of us. Our host makes and bottles his own distinctive Almond liquor; this was readily accepted when offered. We left him and his excellent staff with a promise to see him again next year

Last year we spent seven nights at the Porta Nova and ignored the empty restaurant across the street on the assumption that it was crap as there was no-one in it. This year a few of us got fed up with the hussle and poor service of the central restaurants and wandered across the road for a quick bite, more in hope than in expectation. What a revelation! We ended up there three times. Now, it is a faintly bizarre experience. Its a bit like eating in the owner's own living room with the kids watching the telly at bthe back of the restaurant. On Sunday he clearly didn't expect anyone to turn up at all as he was still in his jim jams and it was a bit of a surprise when ten of us wandered in. He just about coped on his own. but missed out on a second tabnle of ten who turned up while he was in the kitchen cooking ours and didn't wait. The menu was a little limited but he refused to freeze stuff so if he's got it it's fresh. We had the best steak on a stone that I have ever tasted and grilled prawns as a starter. On a separate visit swordwish with prawns. All delicious and about half the price of the restaurants in town. If you want a river view then you won't get it here, but you won't pay under 8 Euro for your Casale Garcia either!

Hats off to Jose. This was a fun experience. I have absolutely no idea how he makes a living out of this place but he deserves to and I hope he's still in business when we next visit.

Veal fillet with port and cream sauce is to die for! Steak on stone is also very good! This place was ideal as it was opposite our hotel so we decided to try it for a late lunch. We were VERY impressed with our value for money!

Lovely place just behind the Hotel Porta Nova. Owner is a lovely chap and food delicious. We stayed for 12 nights in Tavira and tried many places to eat and in our opinion this was the best and very reasonable.

We live in Tavira and mostly stay at home in the summer season because the restaurants are so busy. But this place is fantastic because it is outside the town centre and does not get busy. When driving there through town you see droves of tourists coming towards you,all flocking into the town squares on their way to queue for a table.
The food has always been good, relaxed friendly atmosphere and great value. What else do you want?
