“Charming place”
Reviewed February 18, 2013

The loveliest charming place to stay in Tavira city. Excellent architecture and what a refurbish service the owner has done with this old building! A step away from the boats that sail to the beaches and within 3 minutes walk from the good restaurants of Tavira.

My teenage daughter and I spent four nights here in mid October. We loved it, in every way. The renovation to the typical old house is thoughtful and beautiful. The Blue Suite we stayed in is exactly my kind of relaxed yet luscious simplicity. The terraces are delightful and a great place to chill out. The breakfasts are really special. We loved the way they were presented, and the quality was superb. And the staff are friendly and lovely. I enjoyed Tavira very much and our stay here helped make it even more special. I have no hesitation recommending Casa Beleza do Sul.

We stayed in the Mozaic Suite for 4 nights in June and we found it charming and traditional but a little unfinished with new bare plastered walls in the bathroom and a 2 metre high light switch above the washbasin that my wife could not reach.

In the street below our windows were, a noisy locals bar ( 7am open) a pasteleria and a barbers shop plus a yappy dog. During our stay Tavira suffered a mini heatwave and with NO A/C in the suite the nights were unbearable with only 1 fan for cooling. We enjoyed Tavira immensely with its many superb fish restaurants and traditional feel.

This a great place to stay. The Swiss-Italia owner Paola has converted an old townhouse into four self-contained apartments. By chance I ended up staying in three of them: the duplex, the studio and the mosaic suite. Of these the duplex is the by far the best - a huge, wooden-ceilinged room with kitchen, dining table, roomy living area and bathroom downstairs and a large bedroom on a mezzanine floor upstairs. I could easily lived here full time. The studio is a smaller and simpler, but still comfortable. Both the duplex and the studio look out on to one of the two terraces, so get lots of light. The mosaic suite is a series of rooms - bedroom, living room, kitchen, bathroom, plus various dressing rooms - running down the side of the house, and as a result can feel a bit gloomy by contrast.
Everywhere the detailing is superb. Beds and furniture are really comfortable and each of the apartments has high-quality fittings and finishes. I really liked the Damana toiletries in the bathroom and the soft towels. The rooms are cleaned and beds made every day.
Outside, there is a lower terrace with a table and chairs and plenty of plants, and a roof terrace with sun loungers, a dining table and a BBQ. The roof terrace looks out over adjacent houses and doesn't feel as private as it looks on the website but it's fine for sunning yourself when you don't want to go to the beach.
Paola is an unintrusive but attentive host, really helpful and full of good tips.
Tavira itself was a little quiet in May but is a great base for exploring the area and the local beaches are wonderful.
Everyone seems to rave about the restaurant Bica (including on here) but I had a disappointing meal there. Quatro Aguas at the ferry dock was more expensive but superb.
Finally, there is a supermarket next to the front door of Casa Beleza do Sul but it is more like a deli with prices to match. There is a much cheaper place on the square out the back where the taxis are. I wish I had known that earlier.
Would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Go for the Duplex Suite if it is available. The Mosaic Suite can feel a little gloomy

My husband and myself stayed 4 mights in the mosaic suite recently, while my daughter stayed in the studio and we all very pleased with our stay. The architectural features are wonderful and the rooftop terrace was so nice to relax on, reading, sipping wine and enjoying the amazing views of Tavira. The heavy window shutters block out all noise and light, but open to allow the wonderful breezes and light during the day. THe first two nights we were the only guests and it really did feel like our own private house. The studio is a nice size, with a nice little kitchen area, bed and couch, high celings and a big window opening onto the lower terrace. The mosaic suite is huge with a bedroon, living area, separate kitchen, and large bathroom- plenty of space. The location is wonderful, with the back gate being right on the river front in the center of town. Shops and restaurants literally steps away. We loved walking and exploring all of the cobblestone streets and we were amazed at the number of wonderful little shops - my daughter especially. We hope to visit tavira again, and would definitely stay at Casa Beleza do Sul.

We were travelling in family (2 adults and 2 children). Have stayed at Suite Duplex of Casa Beleza do Sul for 3 nights in February 2012 during the Carnival ‘holidays’. It was dry and sunny, with very pleasant temperatures during the day – but still cold at night.

Casa Beleza do Sul is a renovated traditional house on the center of Tavira, close to the river Gilão right margin. The house was renovated respecting it’s most distinctive architectural features – like the terraces and the ‘tesouro’ rooftops characteristic of Tavira.

The Suite Duplex where we have stayed, is an open floor apartment with a mezannine with a double bed. On the main floor there’s a sitting area with a sofa bed, a dinning table, a kitchenette and a toilette. The room was renovated incorporating traditional materials from the original building and blending it with natural materials: ceramic tiles on the floor, lots of wood and ‘caniço’ (water reed) as internal lining of the roofing. The respect for the traditional does not compromise functionality: the toilet appliances are modern, the kitchenette has a vitro-ceramic stove, there’s good heating, the TV is a flat screen with access to dozens of satellite channels, there’s free wi-fi internet access,… The overall feeling of the apartment is spacious, airy and – at the same time – traditional/modern/chic.

There are two terraces that can be used by the guests. An open terrace on the top floor offering magnificent views across Tavira and a second one on a lower level, more protected with a more intimate patio atmosphere.

The service is efficient and unobstructive. We were welcomed by the owner that explained in a detailed way the ‘how-to-do’ of the house – door keys, cleaning schedule, internet password, etc… After that we were very much on our own – felt like we were on our private house. There's daily room cleaning.

Breakfast was not included on our rate, but for an additional fee you can order it for the following morning. It is delivered on a basket to your room. We have ordered it for the first day of our stay. Breakfast includes fruit juices, different types of bread, yogurt, cheese and jams. On the other days we have prepared our own breakfast by making use of the kitchenette. There are plenty of nearby places where you can buy everything you need – including big Pingo Doce and Continenter supermarkets on the other side of the river.

The house doesn’t have parking facilities. The public parking in the area is paid during weekdays from 9AM to 7PM. A safe free public car parking is within a 5 minute walk.

Tavira is one of the most beautiful, cultural rich and well preserved cities of Algarve, having being spared of the touristic madness that wreck large portions of the Algave during the 80’s and the 90’s. Tavira is best seen and enjoyed just by wondering through it’s narrow streets and squares. For specific sights, I recommend the ‘Camera Obscura’ near the castle – a sure success with kids - and Praia do Barril – access via Santa Luzia/Pedras d’El Rei, 5Kms West of Tavira. Very soon a new Islamic Museum featuring works from the Moors period is going to be inaugurated just next to the Tourism Office in the main square.

For budget good value authentic food from the South of Portugal I recommend “Cantinho do Emigrante” a no-frills restaurant on the other side of the Gilão river - a 5 minute walking.

All in all, this was a very pleasant stay on a city we always like to return to. I recommend both Casa Beleza do Sul and Tavira.

Our preferred spot in the house? Probably the top floor terrace where we would return every morning to enjoy the morning sun and find new angles for photos over Tavira rooftops…

Room Tip: Suite duplex where we stayed is perfect for families with younger children - the sofa bed on the mai...

4 from Norway. We go to the Island of Tavira in daytime, and sit on the roof in the evening. Breakfast out in the yard. Paola, the owner is amasing, and has a lot of tips to make the holiday nice. This resulted in us eating at Bica most days. Just so good food, we Willy return agin. I will alo return to Paolas place, but to be honest, a want it for my self. We feel like we are in Heaven....
The flowers are made with love, and one notice that they are handeld with vare.
Nothing here is negative.....

Room Tip: We had the mosaic- Suite. Only 3suites here, and that is sooooo good
