Tavira in January isn't the most happening place; it's warmer than Kilkenny, busier than Antibes, which would NOT be hard! - so we travel more in hope than expectation when looking for a nice meal. And we found one at A Mesa, on the small square beside the Roman Bridge. This is a menu with a difference: a lot of thought and care has gone into the combinations and presentations, and it shows.
The soup starter was perfect for the cool evening, and just the right amount. I opted for a second starter, because I' greede, and I'm a sucker for truffles, so the truffled mushrooms with slow-cooked egg hit the spot. My partner pronounced the duck 'superb', while I demolished the pig's cheek: not that it wasn't enough, because it was, but because it was sooo tasty!
a fine banana creme brulee was a super finish. Oh,and there was an excellent bottle of red, from a very good list. Top marks. You could say 'Top of the table for the Table', except that would be cheesy!
