Tavira in January isn't the most happening place; it's warmer than Kilkenny, busier than Antibes, which would NOT be hard! - so we travel more in hope than expectation when looking for a nice meal. And we found one at A Mesa, on the small square beside the Roman Bridge. This is a menu with a difference: a lot of thought and care has gone into the combinations and presentations, and it shows.

The soup starter was perfect for the cool evening, and just the right amount. I opted for a second starter, because I' greede, and I'm a sucker for truffles, so the truffled mushrooms with slow-cooked egg hit the spot. My partner pronounced the duck 'superb', while I demolished the pig's cheek: not that it wasn't enough, because it was, but because it was sooo tasty!

a fine banana creme brulee was a super finish. Oh,and there was an excellent bottle of red, from a very good list. Top marks. You could say 'Top of the table for the Table', except that would be cheesy!

What an amazing fine. Tucked in the corner of a square in Tavira this stunning little place is really exceptional. The chef has a really good background including time in a 2* Michelin restaurant. So you know you are in for a treat without the price tag!!! We opted for 5 small dishes to share. This is a petiscos (Portuguese tapas) menu. Designed to share and explore. Crunchy tuna tartar was a revelation as Asian inspired tuna met Indian street food mixed with seaweed powder. Simply stunning and it just got better. Duck breast. The most incredible tasting Xerem. This is a Portuguese version of Italian polenta. Here in Portugal it is wetter, more like corn porridge. This came with prawns and bacon. But the sensational twist was a lemon foam with yuzu that literally had me dragging my finger around the bowl. Add to this another dish of mushroom & truffle purée with a low temp cooked egg and deep fried migas croquettes it was so rich and deep in flavour. Our final dish of slow cooked pork cheeks with mashed potato was again outstanding. And once again demonstrated that this chef knows ingredients & flavour. A very reasonable priced bottle of wine at 16€ and our bill was just under 54€. Amazing value and seriously good. We will be back. The chef is so passionate. Is always looking to add/change dishes with the season so we look forward to exploring his dishes over the year. Special mention to his lovely team who are young, professional and knowledgable. A rare find that I hesitate to recommend as I can see we will not be able to get a table soon as it will be permanently full!!!! Thank you Joao for making a drizzly Saturday lunch superb.

Excellent welcome, wonderful friendly and extremely efficient service.
We were a group of 12 girls for lunch.
Superb location, old renovated Tavira building.
The menu is small, but ALL dishes are well prepared. The portions are small, so make sure you order enough. The wine selection was top notch.
Could not fault anything. We will definitely come back. Highly recommended, thank you A Mesa.

Tavira has many restaurants, quite a few very good ones. This is one of if not the the best. Excellent food, service and ambience. Reasonably priced, slightly different and delicious food. If just in the area for a week or so, make this one of your dining experiences along with Artefact. Two outstanding restaurants.
