“Naughty nauaghty”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 30, 2012

This comment refers to Café Romana , situated in the main square closest to the Roman Bridge.
In December, they are bringing tourists coffee with a cake which the waitress says is " on the house". Even when I refused it clearly, they charged about twice the going rate for the coffee when I ate the cake. This is naughty in my opinion and needs to stop. Do they think tourists are stupid?

“be specific about your order”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 22, 2012

We dont go here anymore. They give you samples and then charge you for it. The range of pastries etc is enticing but inevitably you end up with something you didnt order.

“Make sure you know what you're ordering...”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 5, 2012

Having read some of the other reviews of this place, I'm afraid I have to agree with those who aren't that impressed, which is sad, really, as the Cafe/Restaurant has so much else going for it.

Situated on the sunny side of the main square in Tavira, close to the river, opposite a small, shady town park,it should have been the perfect place to stop for a quick drink in the baking heat of the southern Portugal sun.

However, we just wanted 3 small glasses of Orange Juice, a Coke and a glass of water, NOT the 3 two-pint Orange Juices (on the bill as Sumo Romana), which look quite impressive but a bit overwhelming. We were also charged for a large bottle of water.

The other suprising thing was to be charged for what we thought were complimentary sweets, as we had not ordered them.

I guess it's a case of 'Let the Traveller Beware', but you should always confirm with your waitress exactly what you want, and what you expectto be on your bill.

“Dodgy waitress one day, great one the next!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 20, 2012

it's very much 'who you get' serving you as to whether this place is any good. The huge orange juices are freshly squeezed and delicious, the toasties ample in size and nicely done, the list of wines is adequate. On the first day I went, a nice blonde girl served me and she was efficient and fast with everything for me and all around me. On the second day it was a taller, less smiley woman who got almost everything wrong, was slow and kept swapping dishes around to people on different tables like Manuel in Fawlty Towers. It wasn't funny at the time but now I can laugh. It's certainly a prime location for people-watching and if you get the right waitress you'll have a nice time here.

“The best cakes in the town!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 30, 2011

Romana is a grewat place for people watching, looking out on the marbled square and Roman Bridge. Its ice creams are delicious and the cakes and coffee excellent- and there is always an extra, smaller cake with every large slice. We have been dozens of times- favourites are the fig/ almond/ carob and the apple custard but they are all lovely!
