Take the bus from Zakopane, at the bus terminus there are horse and carriage rides to near the lake. The locals I met were against using these because they said a horse died from over work . They are now regulated and have to change the horses often, I have to say that the horses really work hard on the uphill section , but the driver wiped them down and gave them plenty to drink as the temp was 37c , the trip takes about 30 mins., then a walk of 2k to the lake. There is a lodge at the lake providing food and drink etc. this place gets very busy but there is plenty of seating outside, the views are fantastic of the surrounding peaks including Rysy at 2,499 m ( 8,200 ft).
It is popular to now take the walk around the lake , this takes about 50 mins. Most visitors veer off half way round the lake up to the Czarny Staw a smaller lake and the waterfall, add another 40 mins for this . The walk back to the bus from the Lodge takes about 2 hours down a Tarmac road, with several shortcuts through the long bends. There are toilets halfway down ( portable type) and shops and cafe at the bus stop/ car park

You can tell why this is the main tourist attraction in the area - its beautiful! That however brings with it crowds and queues. I have to say though, on our trip in July everything was well organised - the car parking, the shuttle bus from the car park to the start of the trail (50p I think) and the entrance to the park as well. Good service throughout.

We opted to walk to the lake (4 adults, 1 seven year old and a 4 year old in a rucksack on my back). There is no doubt that its a long walk and fairly boring. There are a few good glimpses along the way though - waterfall and mountains.

Once you reach the top though the lake hits you (and the crowds). We walked to the right of the lake, found a quiet spot and had lunch. Absolutely beautiful. We then walked to the far end of the lake, up the mountain-side to the next lake (about 30 minutes - but very steep) back down and around. We loved every minute but it was tiring.

We got the horse back down, mainly for time (and we had another walk planned for the following day). We worked out it was about 10 miles in total that we walked - our 7 year old was ready to die!

The pictures we took are some of the most memorable of our holiday (and we did 3 weeks across Europe - Croatia national parks included) and a highlight for all of us.

If you can afford it, get the horse there and back and maximise your energy for walking around and above the lake.

We got the mini-bus from Zakopane station at about 1pm for our day trip to Morskie- the mini buses run like clockwork so no need to aim for a particular time, I guarentee there will be a mini bus any time you go. It took about 30 minutes to get to Morskie Oko and the mini bus drops you right outside the entrance- it only cost 4 zl by bus so absolute bargain.

Entrance into Morskie Oko costs 4 zl but 2 zl if you have a student card. You can get the horse and carriage up for 70 zl return but we decided to save money and just walk up which I personally think is well worth the experience, good fun and not that tiring. There are awesome views and scenery the whole way up- the basic trail is very easy to follow although there are some other routes you could take. It's a very gradual climb, with a few brief steeper parts- so anyone can do it, no need for any specialist equipment either just comfy shoes and clothes.

There are toilets on the way up, do bring toilet paper because there wasn't any. Toilets were a bit disgusting, on par with festival toilets at British music festivals. Bring some water as well, there weren't many places to buy bottled water on the way up.

The lake is fantastic, water is so clear! We loved it, a really stunning area. At first there are a lot of people, but if you walk round the whole lake the crowds filter down considerably and it is much more peaceful. We spent about 2 hours looking at different parts of the lake. Amazing photo opportunities.

There is a restaurant at the top, gift shop etc.

We were lucky enough to go there when it was really sunny. We elected to take the 2 hour hike to the lake as apposed to paying a 70 zloty return of going up on the horse carriage. A bus from Zakopane to the area of Morskie Oko was very cheap (only a couple of dollars) and took about 30 minutes. Once you reach the lake you see the real beauty and clear water. If you have anymore strength walk around the lake because you the main area is crammed with people but if you walk away you can find a place to sit and have peace and quiet and get some more awesome views!
