5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 3, 2013 via mobile

Stated here with my partner & two friends. We had all visited Monemvasia before but not this hotel. We found it well signposted, spotlessly clean and wonderfully managed by Phanny who was most helpfull in suggesting nearby restaurants. Each room is different and charged at a different rate. I would gladly recommend this lovely hotel.

From the first moment we glimpsed Monemvasia we knew it would be special, what an exquisite island. Do not attempt to drag your cases (as we did) along the cobbles and up and down the many steps to the Theophano, ring before and a porter will come and do the needful, a 5 euro tip was money well worth spent. Fani Zabelli our delightful hostess met us on arrival and ushered us up to our room Ioustini, beautiful simple yet elegant, a delightful balcony with views of the turquoise sea beyond. We did have a couple of Fawlty-esque moments when Fani chastised us for bringing far too many clothes as we asked for more coat hangars, and remonstrated with my husband when he asked for additional pillows! Staying at Theophano is like no other hotel I have been, it is like being a house guest in a friend's home, filled with beautiful furniture and exquisite paintings, many done by our multi-talented hostess. We went down for breakfast to the sound of beautiful arias wafting out of the windows mingling with the fresh aroma of coffee and newly baked bread. There are many excellent restaurants and bars around the square, and the steps down to the sea and bathing area are just in front of the hotel. This is a very special place and The Theophano did not disappoint, see you next year Fani!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We were recommended this hotel by friends and thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. We were looked after by the owner herself who happened to be in residence. Our sunset arrival was an adventure as we had to follow an Ariadne's thread of directions and signs right along the battlements whilst enjoying a wonderful sea view. But we found our way straight there. The hotel's location means almost no climbing through the charming little streets of the town. On the way out we paid 5 Euros for the services of a porter..even better! But our advice would be not to carry too much stuff into the city, you will not need much anyway. On arrival we were given some tea and had a chance to soak up the beautiful interiors and furniture. Our room was comfortable. The bed was not huge, but adequate. The hot water worked well and we had access to a balcony and a roof terrace with stunning views. For breakfast the owner treated us t home made bread, cake and jams. Delicious. Warmly recommended.

Room Tip: Ask for a balcony

We booked the Virgo suite which was very large, had a shared terrace with the view of the sea and was very comfortable.

This hotel occupies a number of different buildings and it is a bit difficult to get the "lay of the land." Do NOT follow the signs for the hotel which are posted when you enter the main gate. Go striaght down the main road and look for signs for the hotel. Also. there is a porter inside the main gate who will transport your luggage. We did not know this and carried our luggage in the heat of the day to the hotel. You cannot roll your luggage. The road is comprised of large rocks - it is not cobblestones.

The owner said the original building belonged to her grandmother. She purchased other properties to make a hotel. It took 15 years of bureaucracy until she was able to start rehabbing the derelict buildings. Everything has been done in the highest quality and best taste.

Breakfast was very tasty - home made bread and jams, phyllo pastry, fresh squeezed orange juice, local cheese and coffee. We could have had a boiled egg as well.

This is a small hotel and it is not staffed 24 hours a day. If you have a cell phone, you can contact the owner if you need something. If I return to Monemvasia, I would stay at this hotel.

Room Tip: Virgo Suite - large room, great view

As someone involved extensively in all aspects of real estate for the last 35+ years, I tremendously appreciate the artistic beauty of this "hotel." Well, it's not really a hotel. It's someone's home who rents rooms to strangers. We arrived about 2 p.m. No one was there. The doors were locked, except one. It quickly became evident upon entering that this home had been redone in superlative fashion. The furnishings and wall decor were on a par with the remodeling. High class, exceptionally kept. An absolute 10. But you're "not permitted" in any of these areas except by express invitation or for breakfast. Even doing wifi requires you to sit outside. There were several interactions with us and another potential guest (we had a reservation) which made it very evident that there are some people who should have nothing to do with dealing with the general public. I am sure that the potential guest would never, under any circumstances, consider staying there. In so many ways, over the course of our stay, we felt like unwanted, but necessary, intruders whose every action was overseen by someone who needed to be in control of every minute action that occurred At the same time, we were given a treat and water upon arrival and evening wine (made by the family). The hostess is a very accomplished person in a great number of ways, but one of those clearly isn't hospitality. I've travelled the world extensively for a great many years and this was one of the most uncomfortable situations that I've found myself in. It's really too bad. It could be so wonderful.

Room Tip: If you can get an ocean view, that would be recommended as one reviewer stated. Our room was promot...

Dear guest,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review of our hotel on trip advisor. Also thank you for appreciating the decoration and artistic environment of the hotel and for sharing these positive impressions with the trip advisor community.

We are not quite sure why you felt so uncomfortable by our hospitality. Overall we try to provide services that are warm and personal without of course interfering with our guests’ privacy. We do try to make the hotel feel more like a house rather than a commercial hotel since we think that this adds much more to the experience of Monemvasia and leaves guests with nice impressions, a fact verified by many of our reviewers. We are really disappointed that you misunderstood our intentions.

Also, WE ASSURE YOU that all guests are “permitted” in the public spaces of the hotel and indeed many spend time reading or checking the internet in the different lounges and breakfast area. We hardly think that this represents an “express invitation”. Furthermore, since it is a small family operated hotel there may be brief moments when the reception is closed. All the same, at the bell there is the mobile phone number of the owner that you can call anytime.

Once again, thank you for your feedback!

Best regards,

This hotel had been beautifully designed with special touches everywhere. Marble floors, tile work throughout, beautiful breakfast room, flowers in the room, great roof terrace with a view of the village and the cliff, etc.

The only small oddity was our bathroom. It is super small so you actually shower using a handheld nozzle that is between the sink and the toilet. There's no separator so water essentially covers the tiny bathroom. I don't think all rooms are like this. We were only there one night so we really didnt mind but you may want to ask for a room with a full
shower.

Overall, lovely.

Dear guest,

I would like to thank you for taking the time to share your nice review regarding your stay at Theophano art hotel!

We are really glad that you appreciated many features of the hotel. We work very hard to provide a beautiful and comfortable environment for our guests in buildings that actually date many centuries back and that present many restrictions and problems. The size and shape of the rooms’ bathrooms is one of these restrictions. Every room in the hotel is different and the bathrooms follow this pattern. You actually stayed in one of our smaller rooms which, as is to be expected contains one of the smallest bathrooms. It was impossible to fit a tub or a shower cabin in that bathroom so we thought that leaving the shower area open makes it more roomy and practical. The water flows directly in the gutter and the bathroom floor is dry very quickly. This condition is very rare in the hotel as only two bathrooms are designed this way for lack of another option.

Once again, thank you for your positive contribution!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The name Theophano Art Hotel is an expression of the fact that, apart from wishing to create a unique environment for guests, we also wanted to display our family collection of art and antique furniture, lovingly hand picked on our travels in Greece and abroad during the last twenty years. The collection ties in wonderfully with the buildings, and invites guests to enjoy it both in their rooms and the hotel's common areas. The common areas are an important part of the hotel as the accommodation is extended outside the individual rooms. The hotel offers a breakfast room and a lounge which overlook the Myrtoo Sea, where guests may enjoy their breakfast, or relax in different times in the day. There is also a shady veranda, a roof terrace with panoramic views and several separate lounges where guests may play board games, read, use the internet. These spaces are also used for events of different kinds. In the past we have successfully hosted book presentations and poetry readings, jewelry and painting exhibitions, classical music concerts, yoga retreats and weddings! In our hotel no two rooms are the same making every stay a whole new experience for guests, no matter how many times they return. The rooms differ both in terms of architecture, views, orientation, size and balcony as well as in terms of decoration and furnishings. Thanks to this, guests forget that they are in a hotel room and they find themselves immersed in the warm atmosphere of a mansion house. The hotel's location, on the square of Chrysafitissa, the largest open space within the Castle, is absolutely stunning. Once there, the visitor can directly enjoy panoramic views of the sea, the historic fortifications and the traditional settlement. ... more   less
