Skagen is a long detour from the rest of Jutland and the rest of Denmark but the Skagen Museum makes it worth the time to get here. The town is pretty enough and the shoreline is spectacular.
We were blown away by the beautiful works here. The way that the artists represented here used the local light in their art is amazing. They are among the first to actually paint out in the field rather than sketch and then paint in their studios. The art is very nicely presented and there is a lot of background info on the artists and their lives in Skagen. The preserved dining room of a local hotel where the artists would stay and eat is fascinating too.
This was definitely one of the highlights of our trip to Denmark

When you go to Denmark, go to Skagen. The art museum there is the toots ice-cream of museums. Great paintings, great building, and close to the water. Right up there with Legoland Billund, (which is huge coming from a lego freak like me!) so don't take it as another boring art museum, take it as a horizon to view good art, and have fun!

We especially enjoyed the former dining room with all those portraits of the painters that used to live there. And it is especially fun to find the places depicted in those pictures around Skagen and Hojen.

This museum is small by London standards and there are some beautiful pictures, but not many.
The cafe is excellent with beautiful cakes and set in a lovely garden.

BUT I do have an issue with being charged an extra amount for using a Foreign credit card in the shop.
For a very small museum the entrance fee of 90 kroner each makes for an expensive visit and this extra charge is an insult . It is the only place in Denmark I have ever been charged like this.
It is for this reason that I have marked the Art Gallery down to average.

This museum is a must if you are visiting Skagen. You will learn about the history of this small fishing village by following the paintings of the famous impressionist "Skagen painters". Skagen was and still is known for its special light and therefore attracted about 100 years ago, many painters who created a colony that later became known as "Skagen painters."
The museum has a large beautiful garden and a super cozy cafe serving Danish pastries of high quality. Highly recommended.
