Down a side street in this small northern town, in an elegant brick building, this museum offers a couple of hours of insight for the visitor who is curious about local history and the artists who chose the Skagen area for their work. For those knowledgeable about these artists, there is inspiration to be found in the paintings on display and the personal histories associated with them. On the occasion of my visit, a show was in place on the life of Kroyer's wife, an artist in her own right. A stunning feature of the museum was a superb reproduction of the hotel dining room in which the Skagen artists used to gather. To see a painting of the artists gathered at the table for drinks and good cheer and then to walk around that very table -- THAT is an experience worth the small admission fee. There is a good gift shop that just might enable the visitor to take some of that feeling home.
