The mine itself is really impressive, up to 135m down with some pretty spectacular creations, but for me, the negatives equalled the positives.

Price of concession ticket was 60 (student - make sure you are under 24)

We didn't buy a tour ticket as its only 5 stops on a bus from Market square which costs 4 zloty. There was no queue for admissions when we got there. But... We had to wait an hour for admission as there are so many people.

Our guide, unfortunately, was terrible. Her English was so limited, I literally learnt nothing. We seemed to simply wander aimlessly from one chamber to the next knowing nothing about what we were looking at. And as there are so many people there, you are quickly rushed from each chamber by the following tour.

It's also an extra 10 zloty to take photos, although its so dark inside you need a good camera to get decent pictures.

And one last thing, expect to walk... And wait... And queue. If you don't like doing that, I wouldn't recommend it, but for a rainy day in Krakow, it's okay.

We made our own way via local buses which was so cheep & easy if you have small change in pocket for ticket remeber to punch your ticket in the other machine tho. Once there we booked the next english tour & paid extra for photo ticket. The lady guide was very friendly and informative about the history of the mines the only down side was the 385+ steps as long as you are fit it should be enjoyable you can not belive that all the things you see are made out of salt the best was walking into the cathedral chamber AMAZING place. It was nice and cool down there as it was so hot outside good day for it. Lift back :) to ground level.

Really amazing & wondrous experience to get into this old salt mine. Never tought that beneath the ground such beautiful place could be built such as a small church :-) Especially after a quite scarry experience to Auswitsch :-) Actually the visit to this salt mine was optional programme in our tour, but it was really worth the additinal USD 35 a person we needed to spend .......

Booked this trip with Viator before leaving UK, they had an offer on with Auschwitz on the one day and the Salt Mine on the next. The tour company used were DiscoverKrakow and were excellent. They picked us up as arranged at our hotel in a small mini-bus with a friendly driver and we then mixed in with a larger group on arrival with an English speaking guide. You need good knees the initial walk down consisted of 378 steps and you gradually walk down further after walking through various chambers and I can't remember how many steps in total we walked down but it was loads. It was a very interesting tour the carvings are fascinating. I read before we visited that it gets cold now there and we took jackets with us, no need though did not feel cold to us. St. Kinga's Chapel was huge and wonderful the best part of the mine. The way back to the surface is via a very small lift which was very claustrophobic, it did not help that 2 people pushed their way in when it looked already full, I did not like this lift but it is only for a short while. Had a restaurant just before you get on lift but we had no time to buy food, it also had a couple of gift shops. Very enjoyable trip and recommended.

A great place to visit when on Krakow. Skip the expensive tour buses by getting a local bus 304, and beat the queues by getting there first thing in the morning for the 8.30 English speaking tour.
