The Golden Star is the grand old dame of Trebon's hotels and for some time was a well kept hotel. Unfortunately it seems they have tried to cater for everything and everybody rather than sticking to their core values.

We booked last minute for a night away whilst the in-laws looked after the kids and found a surprisingly cheap room on another website. We know the hotel of old and have had a few good nights there many moons ago.

It all went pear shaped when we checked in. They have moved the check in to the back door (why?), where we were immediately told we could not park 'there' and had 15 mins to offload our stuff. We skipped up the stairs to the room and could not believe how rubbish it was. Room 119 is the smallest darkest room they have. It looks at a wall over a tiny alley used for the hotel refuse. The stench of the refuse was only noticeable once we tried going to bed but once noticed you can't get rid of it. Admittedly it was literally a 'stinking' hot night where we were lulled to sleep by the crashing glass of staff throwing bottles away at midnight. BTW the hotel does not have a/c. The room is weirdly furnished and has a tiny bathroom with no bath just a shower. There is a spare bed where they could put a sofa and it is almost devoid of decor. The TV was an old tiny CRT with a remote that looked as if it had been chewed up by a dog.

I said let's just go with it because it was high season and we got it cheap so we headed off in to town and had a nice evening.

The bigger shock came when we went for Breakfast. This was in the 'canteen' which is all self service steel and plastic trays (very youth hostel) with cheap products, awful coffee and watered down juice from a machine. Many years ago I remember breakfast in the dining room with fresh fruits, a limited but lovely buffet and eggs to order with good coffee. That has all gone now and they have ruined the old bar of the hotel for this to cater for lunch time workers, which is just such a shame.

Another point to note is that the Hotel has obviously struck a deal with the rival beer manufacturer to the hometown one. Not a very patriotic move in my eyes for your home market.

I miss the Golden Star of old with the great bar on the square (serving fresh and cold Krusovice), the impeccable service and the clean, comfy and functional rooms. Now it is trying to be modern with spas and canteens and cheap rooms. Stick to your core values.

On checking out I mentioned the room was actually below par for a 4-star and the receptionist said we should have asked to change. Our fault we didn't.

I'm sorry to say but I think there is better value in the hundreds of Penzions around nowadays.

Room tip: Do not stay in room 119.

My wife and I spent a night at this wonderful hotel while biking across the Czech Republic. The hotel is right on the well-kept Old Square - the place to be. The famous town is a gem and everyone seems to be making sure visitors have a great time. Our hotel was well-appointed its thick walls assure a restful sleep, especially if your rooms are not facing the square. Then again, the view is worth some noise! Our rooms faced the interior courtyard. The hotel's restaurant served delicious food, and offered us choices even though we were on a meal plan - not always the case in Europe. The staff was friendly, helpful, and patient. Everyone spoke English.

We stayed in this hotel twice. Trebon is a beatiful small town surrounded by a magnificent landscape. The hotel staff is friendly and helpful. The restaurant is of good quality and you can sit outside. Outside seating is located directly on town main square under Renaissance arcade and prices are reasonable. However, in my opinion, for four star hotel there could be a better selection of toiletries. In summer, if you prefer your windows open (hotel does not have air-conditioning), there could be quite some noise coming from people enjoing the balmy night and returning from pubs, so ask for room with windows oriented to courtyard.

The hotel had a very nice reception area and was centrally located on the main square. Our room was very nice. Although if you need to have your window open at night for fresh air, you will occasionally hear some drunks (or loudly talking Czechs) coming home from the pubs.
The reception desk was very helpful and had a locked room for us to store our bikes at night.
We thought the breakfast was just fine and quite standard for the European style breakfast.
We did get some nice advice from the parking attendant to pay him directly rather than going through the hotel. It seems they charge quite a bit more than he does himself.
It is true that there are plenty of other hotels around but we were satisfied with this one.

The hotel is clean and employees are friendly. The room was sufficient but bathroom a bit too Ikea style. Breakfast buffet pathetic with the cheapest breads and buns on the market, also cold cuts and cheeses were low quality. Some pastry, cereal and yoghurt were on hand. Coffee machine supplied decent java and good selection of teas was offered. Not encouraging to stay for lunch or dinner. Some basic "wellness" procedures are being offered. Acceptable for not demanding customers. No swimming pool and no gym. All in all nothing spectacular but OK for the money we paid. More like 3* than 4*. Local restaurants serve excellent fresh water fish and the countryside is perfect for recreational biking. The town was worth the visit.

Room tip: Go and see it first.
