Nothing prepares you for the size of this crater! The photos don't have much scale unless there are people on them, and even then it's difficult to grasp the scale. To appreciate the crater fully your visit should be on a sunny day so you can wander around, walk down to the water's edge and look up and around, then climb up the opposite side and walk around the top of the huge pile of debris that was thrown up by the impact. Imagine what this must have been like after the impact.
Without doubt the best thing we saw in Estonia. The ferry from Virtsu to Kuivastu is amazing value for money and a fast, frequent service so the island is easy to access.

It was a really interesting place if you like this kind of thing. The size is remarkable and you can clearly see the multiple craters spread around the area.

We arrived before the museum opened but it was free to bites the craters and just a short stroll from the car park.

You can walk around the edge or get down right to the waters edge.

Well worth a short detour off the main road.

Check this huge crater. It is easy to find and also has a nice place to drink coffee. You could buy some nice things made from dolomites here.

We were cycling, and were drawn to Kaali because of the unique event of a large meteor impact. The signs are well designed, provide lots of geological information, and include English explanations. Adjacent is a large crafts display/shop that specializes in laces made by weavers on Saaremaa; many very unusual and comparatively inexpensive.

A short walk from the road is this remarkable crater, which caused scientific discussion for more than a century. Definitely worth a walk around. Local craft shop has some surprisingly good stuff.
