Both the bathroom and bedroom were spacious, it was beautifully quiet outside, decor was both tasteful and artistic in an art nouveau/modern style, breakfast was included and decent by European standards, and there was AC, a refrigerator, and free wifi in the rooms.

While it was a welcome change from hostels and city life, it may been smarter to switch to a different hotel in Riga and just come out here for a day trip. Sigulda was only an hour away by hourly bus, for 1.50 lats. And we had to go back to Riga anyway, to catch our bus to Tallinn.

Note also that, I probably wouldn't recommend that a budget traveller go out of their way to come to Sigulda anyway, now that I've been there. Sigulda was a bit of a letdown for us (I'll try to write a separate review of Sigulda later).

Laundry service was available, but very costly (e.g., 4 lats or 8 USD for a pair of trousers).

There were apparently cascading swimming pools and a sauna/jacuzzi, but we were surprised to find out that these would cost an extra 10 lats (20 USD) to enter.

Taxis from the train/bus stations appeared to be a fixed price of 3 lats (6 USD).

A taxi from Sigulda castle, which we did enjoy, was 4 lats (8 USD).

There was a supermarket about a 5 minute walk away that was open from 8am to 10pm.

Excellent hotel. Many rooms have air conditioners. Located a few minutes from a small mall with a supermarket and a cafeteria. It is also on the road to Cesis and Riga so if traveling by public transportation it is more convenient to take the bus from Riga than the train. Free wifi although some rooms are a bit far from the router. Had an excellent dinner at the hotel restaurant which was very reasonably priced. They also have a sauna although we didn't have time to use it.

The hotel absolutely did not live up to it's star rating. To begin with upon arrival we were told rooms won't be ready till 3pm ( check in time is 14.00) as they have been too busy so we'll have to wait. When we finally got to the room ...The mini bars were empty- if you ordered water from the reception it cost 4Lats +1Lat room service charge( around 7 GBP),mattress curled up,leaking aircon...

The most disappointing was the restaurant - on the first night we were told we can only order starters as the chef has gone home for the night - this was at about 9 o'clock in the evening!! On the second night told to go and eat somewhere else as the restaurant might be busy! The service was appalling..!
Breakfast was very poor, flies circling around the food , may be looking for the unfortunate comrade swimming in the water jug...

On the positive side - the reception staff were always trying to be helpful and kept on smiling through the barrage of complaints.

We stayed as a couple in this hotel actually in August 2010. I just had to add some words about this place because it really made a great impression.

We were travelling by car and the hotel was a little hard to find. Actually, the Malpils street is hard to find in general - it is right behind the VW dealership building.

I read about the hotel before we picked it, and it really sounded attracting. The insides of the hotel are very cozy and pleasant - you may park the car right at the entrance, very comfortable lobby and a really nice receptionist at the desk. She was helpful in all ways - told us how to get to the center of the town, gave us a map and selected the most attractive parts she recommended to visit.

The center of the town is indeed a long way from the hotel, you will have trouble walking there. Transportation is available, but not sure if it is straight from the hotel, so you might ending up calling a cab. If on wheels, it is just a 5-7 minute ride to the center. The town is small, but very lively at summer - lots of flowers and cute places to take pictures, including old castles, caves and parks.

The room of the hotel was like new - everything was clean, the hotel corridors were very quiet with a place to sit and chat in the middle. Bathroom, bed, linen, fridge, conditioner, and a wide breakfast that really took us by surprise. Omelet was really juicy, you could select from porridge, cereal and meats to fruits and veggies. Coffee, tea and fresh juices really added up to that gastronomical selection.

The dinner was cooked perfectly - tender pork fillet with vegetables and mash were heavenly, chicken was cooked for my lady with all kitchen love. Prices are also affordable and you will enjoy the meal in a really nice and warm surroundings of the restaurant's hall.

I strongly recommend that hotel and if we ever tend to refresh our memories in that town, Segevold will be our first pick to stay for the night.

Far from town.
This might be the best place to stay as it is number 3 in tripadvisor and the other 2 are more like B&B’s.
The rooms were very large but very hot with no air conditioning. The twin beds were very small and not very comfortable. At least the pillow was better than the last hotel. No kettle here either. Reasonable amenities but wall ineffective hair dryer. Good TV but only one channel in English and it just repeated the same news over and over. Reading light was not great. The restaurant was pretty good, very reasonably price and attractive.

The Segevold hotel is a new hotel, and relatively expensive for the region. It has spacious rooms and is nicely decorated. It is located close to the busstop for riga-cesis buses, but far from the centre of sigulda. However, frequent buses run at a few minutes walk, and there is a large shopping centre nearby.
What we did not expect in such a new hotel, was being able to follow the nightly escapades of our neighbours, they certainly enjoyed the big beds. Reception staff was friendly, but breakfast staff was quite rude.
We did not visit the swimming pool, which does look very nice in the pictures.
