“Great breakfast but off the beaten path”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 14, 2013

This hotel is situated in a peculiar area. It is across the street from the Belarus embassy and an old, quaint, orthodox-style church. There is really nothing to do in the immediate vicinity of the hotel. It is relatively close to some no-go areas for tourists. Yet, if you stay on the roads that leads you on the most direct path to the downtown area, you'll be fine...even late at night. Depending on your pace, downtown is a 10-15 minute walk. There is a massive outdoor market that lies directly between old Riga (downtown) and the hotel. It's really quite a sight and fun to tour around. I bought some cherries from there for my room but because there was no refrigerator, I had to eat them fairly quickly. There is free Wi-Fi in the hotel but it went in and out of service quite regularly the first day I was there. On the second and third days the Internet worked fine so I'm not sure what to make of its dependability. I haven't researched this but I believe Riga is working on putting in hotspots all over the city because the same Internet I connected to at the hotel was the same I connected to in particular places downtown. The room itself is just fine....nothing notable but nothing worth overly complaining about. There are different sized rooms but mine was cramped with two people. There were only enough towels for one, however, my friend used a hand towel for his showering. Oddly, there were no Kleenex in the room, no iron or ironing board either. The bed was comfortable enough, I've slept on far worse. The breakfast was extensive and caters to many different tastes - included in the price of the room. Also included in the price was a message. I don't remember booking any sort of special deal that included this amenity so I was a bit surprised when they revealed this option to me. I took advantage of it and was glad I did...a wonderful, 50 minute service that was quite relaxing. The hotel advertises the use of their relaxation area for up to 14 LVL but it really is not worth it in my opinion. There is a dry sauna...not very hot, and a steam room that I couldn't figure out how to turn on. Other than those two rooms there are a couple of showers, some tea, water and a small sitting area. There are other types of body treatments and spa services available like waxing and facials. Not bad overall, just keep in mind that this hotel is not located in the downtown area.

If you get a room for 60 maximum 70 euro is a good ratio. Otherwise it would be too much. The room i had was quite small. Bathroom is in order however and everything is properly clean. As other travellers wrote, my bed had on both sides windows facing on neighboors' windows, that means it is impossible to keep curtains open, even in the morning as they are really close!
Breakfast is reach enough. Negative point is that the room is very tight, when a few people are at the same time there it is hard to move around and take some food. Just skip the rush hours!!
Staff at reception are very nice and helpful.
Parking on the square is free all day.
The pub (as it is a pub) closes a bit too early in summertime: 11:00 p.m.
I didn't try the spa.

Stayed in this hotel in March 2013 - Reasonably priced , comfortable room with a good breakfast option is what you will get .

The staff was very helpful in helping us get around

It is a bit of a walk especially at night when you have to walk through the market place but all in all a nice place

Our suite was on the ground floor and had the disadvantage of being beside the dining terrace (used for musical entertainment) and the outside smoking area, so a touch noisy and smelly in the late evening. (Not a Johnny Cash fan so the "tribute" singer who did everything in a Cash style was a little wearing)
The hotel is close to both the bus station and rail station so ideally suited for exploring, also a gentle stroll from both Old and New Towns. Staff are knowledgeable and eager to help. Rooms are spacious and well equipped, internet access is via an unsecured connection.
Breakfast is served in the Pub and can be taken out onto the terrace, choice is varied and there is something to suit all tastes.
Warning: the hotel doesn't "do stamps".

Agree with other comments - reasonable size bedroom & bathroom (excellent shower) and breakfast offered a very good choice. c. 15 mins from Old Town, but you know that when you book. We took the Air Baltic bus from airport to bus station (good service and c. 5 mins walk from hotel). However, when we arrived at the bus station, we found that one of our cases had disappeared en route. Bus driver said he would report it to the company, and hotel staff were really helpful, first in contacting the bus company and later in calling the police so we could report the loss. (Police returned the case later that night - goodness knows where it had been). On our last day we got back to our room to find that the lights weren't working. We had a table booked for dinner, but mentioned it to the receptionist on the way out - she would have offered us another room, but they were fully booked. By the time we got back, she had checked the fuse box and reset it, so everything was working. Also helped us to get boarding passes for the return journey. Always charming, and couldn't have been more helpful. What more can you ask?

Room Tip: We asked for a quiet room and were very happy with the one we were given

Stayed at the hotel, as a couple, for 9 days and was really happy with it: the room on the fifth floor was spacious, with a magnificent view of “the biggest wooden church in the baltic region”. It had an adequate bathroom, a good double bed, (but, alas, separate blankets), enough cabinet space, a small TV and free WiFi but no fridge, coffee maker, iron/iron board or safe (you can get “safe services” at the reception). The quality of sleep was excellent - the vicinity of the hotel is very quiet, with no passing traffic.

The breakfast was, by my book, very good - I have paid more for less. The breakfast room doubles at the evenings as a fine restaurant and there’s a pleasant veranda outside, with a view of the above mentioned church and live performances on weekends.

The hotel resides in a quiet, a bit rundown neighborhood, about 7 minutes walk from the central market and another 7 minutes to the town center. We encountered a drunk or two on our daily walks from and to the hotel - but i’m sure it can happen anywhere.

In conclusion: Hanza hotel “quirks it had a few, but then again, too few to mention” and I highly recommend it.

One piece of advice: if you want to see real Riga, get up around 7 o’clock in the morning, go to the market, buy a strong black coffee (be warned - in a thin plastic cup) for 15 centi-something and take a walk around the wakening up marketplace. In one hour you will learn more about Riga and its hard working people than in a week spent at the tourist trap called Old Riga.

the hotel is very close to the beautiful Riga market which is unmissable and
The old town is around 15 minutes walk.
Rooms are quite big and clean. Lots of choice for breakfast.because the hotel was fully booked we had it in the pub, in the basement.
They have a terrace in the street and at weekends they host live music.
In the reception there is a pc all customers can use free of charge
