“Nice boutique hotel, fantastic location”
Reviewed June 12, 2012

We stayed at this hotel for a single night with a 3 year old, but could have stayed here more if we were in Riga longer. The airport shuttle knew the hotel and dropped us just a few yards away.
First the pros - the location is fantastic, in the old town itself, so you don't waste much time getting to the old town. The Central markets and the bus stands are right across the street. The room was well furnished, nice big bed, good linen, one cupboard, kettle for tea coffee and a mini bar. They don't provide milk for the tea though- I thought it was an oversight, but when I called them they said they would charge extra for it. The bathroom is nice and clean - bathtub with a good shower, a good hairdryer etc.

Cons- the breakfast was strange a mish mash of various things. The pancakes were not very good. The ladies at the reception were not very polite - they kept looking at each other and smirking, while we were talking to them

Would recommend the hotel for a short stay. Nothing bad about this hotel really, but nothing spectacular about it either!
There is a good bike rental shop near the hotel, if you need a bike, great way to explore the old town!

We stayed here early June for a couple of days - accommodation in Riga seems reasonably cheap compared to many other cities and we found this to be a good place to stay in the "old town".

We ended up taking the shuttle bus from the airport - the staff at the desk told us how the bus doesn't actually travel into old town but that the driver would be able to stop on the outskirts with the hotel a 200m walk from there. The driver was very helpful indeed, despite initially not knowing of the location of the hotel, and ended up letting us off and pointing to the hotel, which was clearly visible from the drop-off location (near the bus stop).

Upon arriving, we noticed the hotel was advertising cheaper rates than we had paid. However, the very next day we overheard a gentleman asking for accommodation and being told the place was booked out. The hotel itself looked somewhat dated but was very clean. The room we were staying in was quite small with there not being any real room to put our suitcases - the bathroom was almost bigger than the room itself with a shower over the bath.

The bed was ok with spare blankets and pillows in the wardrobe. There was also a fridge and a mini-bar that was reasonably priced; as was the restaurant although we never ate there. The free wifi worked well and was faster than many other hotels we've stayed at.

Breakfast was an odd combination of everything from yoghurt to cheese pancakes - you will find something to eat. You can choose to eat your breakfast indoors or on the terrace but because of the weather, 6-10 deg C when we were there, we had ours in the cellar.

Staff was helpful - helped arrange for taxi to airport and also held our luggage after checking out as we had a late flight.

Location was really good, we ended up walking all over old town and kept coming back to the hotel for a bit of a rest. There are lots of places to eat - look for the business lunch which typically includes three courses at a very reasonable 3.5-4.00 lat, compared to a normal lunch which would otherwise set you back anywhere between 6-10 lat. Don't be scared to ask what the business lunch is if not written in English.

Never did find out what's with all the cats roaming around old town.

Hotel is looks great and well presented. Room was more than we expected which was great. Breakfast was ok, delicious pancakes. But did not like the staff since they did not seem interested at all - just doing their job. Which is fine, but would expect more from a 4 star Hotel.
However, the location was great - right in the centre. Shopping centre is 2min walk away.

Just returned from a 3 night stay in Riga. Monte Kristo Hotel was in a brilliant location - literally over the road from the bus station - number 22 bus from the airport for only 70 cents!
Check in at hotel was efficient, although we found the staff to be generally couteous but not overly pleasant - this tended to be a theme with most of the Latvians that we met! Our room was a twin superior room and although we were disappointed there was no window we were supplied with a fan when we complained that the room was very stuffy. Everything else in the room was very clean and modern and the beds and linen/towels were fine. Breakfast was superb and we thoroughly enjoyed it - great choice for everyone and good tea and coffee. Hotel superbly positioned for exploring the Old Town of Riga which is extremely beautiful -everything in walking distance. Would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a window as several have skylights instead.

This hotel is situated in Old City and very close to railway station and old city market - not all tourists know them and the market is a very interesting place. Hotel works on 'Bed and Breakfast' system and serve breakfast in underground restaurant. Fresh salads, pancakes, cheese and sausages - everything were perfect! Just one thing - we had a room on ground floor, so in night time we were listening for our loud neigbors. And in our room we had porn channel :))

Room Tip: Do not choose ground floor - you will hear all the noises

I stayed at Hotel Monte Kristo for a week in September 2010.

Nice room, perfect size for one person! Clean, quiet and close to all the attractions on my list! Decent breakfest, and ok food from the restaurant.

The staff was a bit stiff, but I didnt live there to make friends. They did what I asked them to.

Overall a great hotel, I would recommend it to anyone!

Boutique Hotel Monte Kristo located in an old building right in Old Town of Riga. Therefore it is very conveniently located to all places of interest as well as to Riga central raiway station. Many shops, cafes, restaurants and an airport bus stop are also nearby. We stayed in a budget economy room and have been warned that it doesn`t have window. Actually that was the only inconvenience and it really didn`t bother us at all. In return the room price was significantly cheaper. Our room had two levels. On the first there were bathroom and a small dining area with a minibar, table and tea\coffee making facilities.Bedroom equipped with 2 beds, TV and a music system was upstairs. A small opening instead of a window looked out to a vestibule. Everything was clean and in a good condition. Common spaces, including reception area with comfy sofas were lovely decorated with paintings and antique furniture.Buffet breakfast was served in a cozy cellar. There was a restaurant as well on a ground floor with a summer terrace.
I had a pleasant impression of my stay at this hotel

Room Tip: Economy room was a real value for money.
