We decided to try Uncle Vanya for two main reasons: one, we were fresh off our 16 day trip to Russia, and had discovered we both really like good Russian cuisine; and two, this place was very highly recommended in TripAdvisor. Two other reasons also helped: it was convenient to our hotel in Old Riga, and we love Chekhov's plays, including Uncle Vanya. It was a perfect choice for our last night in Riga. Our dinner was superb in every way. We could have sat outside and enjoyed the view of the beautiful art nouveau buildings in the neighborhood, but we chose to sit inside because the interior of this restaurant is so inviting, cozy and charming. Plus, it was air conditioned –– a big plus in view of the incredibly hot weather under which the Baltic was wilting in late July. The service was friendly, attentive, prompt and totally English fluent. Best of all, the food was divine. My wife and I shared a large appetizer of pelmeni (Russian tortellini) stuffed with salmon and sturgeon. It was sublime –– perfectly prepared, light, not at all heavy, and delcious. For our main course, we shared a whole baked sturgeon with mushroom cream sauce, cauliflower and potatoes. It was also absolutely delicious. The dinner was pretty filling, so we skipped dessert, but instead enjoyed the house-made traditional Latvian vodka. It was great! Highest possible recommendation!
