A wonderful orthodox cathedral, both from outside as well as from inside. If you happen to visit this place during a church service, you will feel welcome and comfortable. You'll doubtlessly enjoy the overall atmosphere, the chants by the priests and the choir, and see the people participating or just watching. The paintings are not very old, nevertheless really nice and giving a great impression in every point of view.

Looking at the Russian Orthodox Cathedral it is something special - in particular compared to catholic and protestant cathedrals in Western Europe. The difference gets evening bigger moving inside.
The cathedral was build in 1876-83; during the period when Latvia was part of the Russian Empire. It is the largest Orthodox cathedral in the Baltic. The cathedral is actually not that big (partly because of no seats there), but the colourfulness and attention to details is astonishing. Personally, I am not sure if I have seen such a beautiful cathedral ever before. Location is just towards the North East and within walking distance from the city centre. I consider this "A must do" visiting Riga. You will enjoy.

Slightly smaller than I expected, the Nativity of Christ Cathedral ( also known as the Russian Orthodox Cathedral), appears to have some modern aspects.

This I understand was due to recent restoration / renovations, as during Soviet occupation times, when the beautiful building served as a restaurant, and a latterly as a planetarium.

There were the usual signs and symbols outside advising dress restrictions, behaviour, and no photography; so i was very surprised to see a tv crew interviewing local dignitaries inside.

Skirting around the television paraphernalia, I was impressed, indeed inspired by the icons, ceiling and especially the screen, only the urgency of the place spoilt it. Serene, and conducive to reflection it was not- due to the intrusive cameras.
Still worth visiting though.
