We were very lucky and had a service performed at the time we were there. There was beautiful singing and a very peaceful atmosphere. We stayed way longervthan intended and could pay attention to many details of the church. It is fairly impressive, both inside and outside. Have a look yourself and enjoy the building.

The Nativity of Christ Cathedral was built between 1876 and 1883, while Latvia was part of the Russian Empire. It is the largest Russian Orthodox cathedral in the Baltics. In the early 1960s the Soviet authorities closed the cathedral and converted it into a planetarium; it was returned to its congregation in 1990. The cathedral has five gilded cupolas and is being restored. It has an unusual central altar, many beautiful icons and of course painted murals on the walls and ceilings.

Officially, no photography is allowed inside the cathedral. Perhaps since I was dressed respectfully, with my head fully covered by a scarf, and acted properly, buying and lighting several candles, the guard allowed me to take several pictures of the entrance room.
