I first visited the zoo in 1993. The memories still linger and, with some trepidation, I visited again this summer. The person in the ticket office was quite friendly. The paper zoo plan was not very user-friendly and did not seem to offer any logical route to cover the site. I was impressed by the new giraffe facility, the tropical house and some imaginative enclosures. But the changes were not everywhere. The polar bear (was it the one I saw before?) was bored out of its mind in a concrete desert. A lion lay sleeping, again in a largely desert enclosure. The two hippos were half-submerged in a pool of dirty smelly water and gave every appearance of having given up hope of more interesting life. The zoo is improved but still there is a lot of work needed to give all the animals good conditions. Toilet facilities for the humans also need improvement, please
