Owner description: This is the only surviving city gate of Riga, which was built into the city wall in 1698 during Swedish rule.

I cannot explain why this landmark is so important. Every time I show someone around we go through this gate, but actually there is nothing special about it. It is just there and it has name

Nice part of the old city built on 1698 while the Swedes where in power. Worth to visit also the Powder tower and the cafes and gift shops on the Torna iela.

I do not think the Swedish Gate is anything to boast about but considering how small Riga is and how few places are really worth visiting, I would say it is worth a photo.

By itself this gate is a little above average with its story but for the most part it is a part of a lot of other little things that make Old Town interesting.

A quick photo op here and you won't miss it because there is almost always someone standing in front of the gate taking photos. Once you cross through the gate you will immediately notice you are not in Old Town any more. The ho hum of real life housing is on the other side.

Put this location on your map and make it a point to walk by but the gate itself should take no more than 10 minutes.

When in Old town (Vecriga) come to see it. If on guided tour ask your guide to tell you the story about the gate and the reason it was hacked in the residential building. Each guide may has his own story.
