The only way to get into the ancient Powder Tower is through the War Museum. However, this is not the only reason to drop in. The museum provides an exhaustive overview of Latvian military history from medieval times through to the 1960s (and a section on hunting!). There are plenty of interesting artifacts and displays but no English descriptions though English guides are available in most rooms. entrance is free no there's no excuse to not drop in.

Drop into this free museum when the weather fails you. Everything is written in Latvian but there are books in English at the entrance to each room or cards next to each display that explain things, although not for everything. Good for a browse and look at old uniforms, documents, propaganda and photographs.

Nice museum, lots of reading and information in glass boxes, your typical war museum.
Didn't walk round it all so can't comment on too much.
But worth a little visit if your near as it is free entry

The museum covers from the stoneage to the present and is very well laid out on four floors of the building The exhibits are interesting. As a throwback from earlier times you will be followed around from room to room by a suspicious lady guard.

The location on the edge of the old town, the Gunpowder tower that forms part of the museum, a lot of information about the difficult history of the Latvians with outstanding exhibits (and photos - from the period on that they became available) spends an interesting couple of hours of your time. On top of that - it is free.
