Review of Latvian War Museum

Latvian War Museum
Ranked #29 of 300 things to do in Riga

Free entrance but museum is not made for tourist. Everything is written only in Latvian. You can have a portfolio in different languages what describes what you can see in the room, but just in general. So you look some item in the room, there is a lot of text in Latvian around, but no single explanation (even in the portfolio) in English. Museum itself is pretty huge describing Latvians as agent worriers from the beginning of their time till today. I guess for locals it gives a perfect historical overview of Latvia military history, but for tourist it is just a large building you can walk around free of charge in a bad weather.

This museum located in the Old Town covers every aspect of Latvias long military history from medieval times (when Latvia was one of biggest powers in the Baltic) though the famed Latvia regiments of the Czarist times to the war of independence, the bloody battles of WW2 (when Latvia was occuppied first by Soviet Russia, then by Germany and then by Russia again to freedom in 1991. Also stuff on Latvians serving in French and USA armies and collection of model tanks! The best museum in the old town and good section on trench warfare

We are big history buffs and these places are a must for us when on a city break. I think I can safely say though the staff were quite the rudest I have ever come across. On entering we had the word "coats" shouted at us and we were pointed in the direction of the lockers, however on the way round we were the only people coatless! I know its the wrong attitude when visiting another city but there wasnt enough english translation for me. Each area was supervised by staff who seemed to be thoroughly miserable and even when greeted with a smile and a hello they just ignored us and stared at us as if we were about to steal a tank!! Not a very pleasant experience, wouldnt hurry back.

Interesting museum - the rooms had A4 sheets of paper explaining the exhibits in English.

BUT...as soon as we entered we were shouted at to go to the cloakroom! and once we had dropped our stuff off in the cloakroom we were followed around the entire museum by staff! wherever we looked there was a staff member lurking behind an exhibit keeping an eye on us, was a bit disconcerting!
