Owner description: The story behind this unique architecture tells of its Latvian owner who was denied membership in the powerful Great Guild; to show his displeasure, he built two cat sculptures on his roof with their backsides facing the Guild and their tails straight up to finish the insult.

“Nothing special”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

If you don't have a tour book or are on a guided tour this place will have little meaning other than the cat's sitting on the roof. Luckily my wife had a tour book so we were able to make more sense out of the building.

“Cats on the roof”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

This yellow Art Nouveau building is a popular image of Riga for its feline statues. The story goes that the merchant wanted to become a member of the Great Guild. But this was refused, because you had to be German to become a member and he was Latvian. In retaliation he put 2 statues of black cats, with their tails up onto his roof, positioning them so that their backsides faced the guildhall. After a court battle, the judge decided that he should be accepted as a member of the guild, and he had to turn his 2 statues around.

“Not much to see”
Reviewed July 23, 2013

There is not much to see, however it is a curiosity of Riga's old town. You can take a couple of pictures and continue exploring the old town.

“Visit late in the afternoon”
Reviewed July 14, 2013

The light is best after 4:00pm to take photos of the building and it's two cats. Unless you're a cat lover there's really not much to see or even enjoy.

“Cats on a roof”
Reviewed July 1, 2013

Nothing more, nothing less, it is the Cat House. Do stop by and have a look at the rooftop mousers. In the vicinity there are loads of cafes and restaurants so in general it's a good place to hang out.
