Owner description: Completed in 1935 to commemorate Latvian independence, this symbolic statue in Old Town shows the image of Liberty holding three stars in her outstretched hands, symbolizing unity of the country.
Reviewed July 23, 2013

It is probably the most important monument in Latvia, mainly because of what it represents for the people. It is very common to see soldiers standing guard.

The Freedom Monument is impressive and of great importance to the Latvian people. However, it is not worth a trip alone to see it. The best part is as you approach from Old Town you go through the city's Canal Park which is a wonderful, green oasis.

this monument is very dear to the Latvian and Soviet's heart and seems to be an important visiting place for tourists as was being photographed when ever i walked past which was often in the week i stayed in Riga- it is a huge tall very Russian looking symbolic monument, rather unattractive i thought...but the locals seem proud of it and that is all that matters really....

Monument location is very good and surrounded from one side with river and another side with beautiful park. The best time to visit this place is April /May or Summer time

Situated on a wide bridge that crosses a nice park area around a little river, the monument itself is just a granite pillar with 1930s style statues. But it's fun to watch the guards change which seems to happen at 10 and 11 a.m.
