Owner description: This charming maze of narrow and crooked cobblestone streets is filled with a mixture of architectural styles including Nordic, Gothic, Renaissance, baroque and Jugendstil, plus such historic sites as the 13th-century Riga Castle, St. Peter's Church, the Swedish Gate and the Freedom Monument.

I really enjoyed Riga. Gorgeous old city centre. I've done a couple of great architectural walks. One through the art-nouveau area and one through the old russian area starting from the market.
The old centre is clean.
I've met some very nice locals.
Nice bars and restaurants.

This was about the only thing we did in Riga since we were on the tailend of a 2 week trip thru Russia and the Baltics, but this was a perfect capper.

It's very relaxed and the atmosphere is wonderful. You feel the energy and are refreshed after going through. Tons of sights, a nice train tour through the old town, great cafes, places to get superb views and for the shopper - too many places to shop :)

Loved the central area with street performers, the lively cafes, the unique architecture (esp the lil black cat perched on the corner of the tower!)

Old Riga is an absolutely amazing place to visit, especially if you enjoy history. As you walk through its cobbled streets, it feels as if you are stepping back in time. The buildings tell of the history of this beautiful place and each step takes you down an adventure of past and present. The people are incredibly kind to travelers and most can speak more than one language so there are no barriers to enjoying every moment in the jewel of the Baltics! If you are traveling the Baltic states or anywhere nearby, this is a must see.
This is a place of music and magic and is very reasonably priced. I spent a week wandering the streets and never had any problems. If anyone tells you that the streets of Riga aren't safe for foreigners, you can tell them that they are safer than most streets in the USA. My only regret is that I didn't have more time to spend there.

No question - Riga is the pearl of the Baltics!! The old town has it all... but most impressive are the many beautiful old and historic buildings, which have been lovingly restored and freshly painted. It has an architectural diversity second to none... Art Nouveau, Classicism, Baroque and Renaissance, But you can also find some old wooden structures along the peripheral areas of downtown - quite a contrast!! This part of town is easy to discover, as it is rather compact. - Don't miss to walk through Bastejkalns (or "Bastion mountain", as it is called), a picturesque park with its small canal and hilltop lookout, that separates the old town from the more elegant part of Riga along Raina Blvd. Then stroll up one block on and along Brivibas Blvd to Elizabetes iela (street) before returning to the Freedom Monument by criss-crossing the Esplanāde and Vērmanes Dārzs parks (also very beautiful). You get the most out of it when you do this during the daytime. Once it gets dark, you better stay in the lit-up areas (but then, that applies to places almost everywhere).

Friendly people, good food, only a couple of hours from London, good bars and pubs, fairly cheap (about £2.20 for a beer), and it felt safe. Don't believe all you read about Riga - we didn't encounter any problems and had a great weekend!
