Having seen pictures of the House of Blackheads I was expecting a larger square possibly because most places I have been to in Eastern Europe have larger squares, Having said that the buildings are contrasting and beautiful and we walked througharea on a number of occasions on our visit and it felt different every time, I spotted another little facet each time and it had a lovely atmosphere when we were there with some excellent buskers.
The colours are amazing especially when the sun is shining,

It is one of the must-sees in Riga, especially the Blackheads Houses, the monument of Roland (the original statue is in St. Peter's Church), Town Hall and the Museum of Occupation. Few know how much the Latvians suffered during the Soviet time - worth to learn.
Next to it is a place where the tourist busess stop and most of the walking tours start at Roland's foots.

Visited Riga about four year ago
The square and some buildings are nice but not on the scale of Prague for example
However the Latvian people are not very nice
There is an undercurrent that you might be scammed anytime in this city or worse

We were there when some important political meeting was to take place, so there were some armed policemen and a fence. On a bright summer day like the one we were visiting, all the guilding and painted statues on the building walls glittered and dazelled like jewels. Loved it so much that visited agian on the next day to have a closer look. However, they are not open to the public to explore inside the buildings.

Old Town and square, with lots to see, places to stroll and relive history. Impressive buildings. Watch out for pick-pockets when in the old town square.
