Owner description: The Museum of the Occupation of Latvia is an historic educational institution located in Riga, Latvia. It was established in 1993 to exhibit artifacts, archive documents, and educate the public about the 51-year period in the 20th century when Latvia was successively occupied by the USSR in 1940, then by Nazi Germany in 1941, and then again by the USSR in 1944.

I knew very little about Latvian history, and, as this was my first visit to Latvia, I thought I should find out more. This museum was an excellent place to start. We were lucky to arrive just as a tour was starting. The young man who did the English tour spoke perfect Enlish and was knowledgable and passionate about what he was talking about. Although we could have spent an hour and a half reading all the information, it was much more interesting and easier to follow with a guide. It was a long tour, but very cheap, equivalent to a couple of quid, and definitely the best way to get the most out of the museum. The whole experience just made me want to find out more about this fascinating country. The holocaust exhibition that they had on at the time was also incredibly moving. Don't leave Riga without a visit to this museum. It is free but they ask for donations

Informative displays, artifacts and personal stories make this a fabulous museum. You get a real sense of how the Latvian people suffered - emotionally, physically, culturally and economically - during the years of Russian and brief German occupations. I particularly found the display on the mass executions by the Nazi's in the nearby Rumbula forest to be particularly moving. The displays contain full English translations so it is unnecessary to hire a guide. It is fitting that the museum is located in a former Soviet style government office building - about the only one remaining. Allow a good two hours.

The museum was established to preserve the memory of the hundreds of thousands of Latvians (roughly 10% of the population.)who were killed, tortured, deported during WW2 by both Stalin and Hitler.
Get a tour guide. The museum is not about data; the displays are personal and moving.

We enjoyed learning about the history of the people of Latvia and what they went through during the three occupations. However, we booked a guide and the tour was slow and a bit drawn-out. Our recommendation is to skip the guide and go through the museum yourself. Expect to do a lot of reading.
