The museum is hidden behind the new national library on the west bank of the river on the bus/tram route from the old town and a 15 minute walk across the river. There is a very good indoor exhibition on the history of the railways of Latvia and the building of them. Entry is 5 euro which was good value for money. There was also old communications equipment to be seen. Outside there were approx 20 old engines and rolling stock. from steam to diesel which was the fun part of it. Yes I would recommend this museum as a must if you have the time

Outdoor static collection of mostly Russian built rolling stock and steam and diesel locomotives to please all ages. Indoor well laid out and informative museum tells the history of Latvian Railways from the beginning. Also inside a rebuilt logging locomotive. Plenty of artifacts and photograph to inform even the ladies following Dad and the kids. Clean and tidy place, English spoken.

We really enjoyed our trip to the Railway History Museum. Although I had travelled past it every day, I had never gone inside until my sister came to visit. We had a lovely time learning a lot about railways in Latvia and around the world. Great for a rainy day!

This took some finding, hidden away behind the massive new Library on the West Bank of the river. There were about 10 static exhibits of USSR steam locomotives and diesel traction. The inside museum is coupled with an arts centre display which makes it a bit different.

The museum is right behind the new Latvian/Riga National Library (pyramid like building). Inside there are pictures and explanations about railroad development. Unfortunately most of the explanations seemed to be in Latvian or somehow I missed English information. There is also working model train.
The real gems are outside, old trains, some you can enter to get feeling how it felt to travel on Soviet era train with wooden benches.
The museum inside is very children friendly, with Kindergarten operating in same premises? Admittance is really cheap compared to American museum or several other attractions in Riga.
