THis cozy club serves great food at outstanding prices. THe only problem was finding the place, which is downstairs in old town Riga. Just a doorway with a small hanging sign, leading to stairs down. Once downstairs, however, the space opens up to a series of arched-ceiling rooms. Walls and ceilings are brick and mortar, with just the right level of up lighting. Folk art and musical instruments are displayed throughout the 4 rooms of the club.

Atmosphere is definately casual, some round tables with chairs, some long tables with benches. The food is superior. We have been throughout RIga's best restaurants, and the food here is done as well as anywhere, but the prices are much better. So much so, that the crowd is often young students and 20-somethings come for the "solanka" soup.

The beer selection is excellent. there were at least 10-15 different local latvian draft beers to choose from, including all the Latvian favorites, but also some excellent microbrews that are quite hard to find.

There is also live music on most nights we have been there. Performances range from straight acoustic guitar and singing (both in English and Latvian), to full-up folk ensembles.

Overall, a great experience, with excellent local cuisine, lively young crowd, and great prices. A must for travelers wanting to relax and and get a feel of the local youth culture.

This place is really nice restaurant with good atmosphere, delicious food and cheap prices. Live music in the evenings and lots of local people. Just be sure to pay the exact amount, because the waiter does not want to give your change back :(

There is a truly wonderful collection of local beers, and coming from the UK and Belgium we greatly appreciate a good beer. Not only that the food was genuinely good. Excellent value, plentiful and delicious. Finally friendly and attentive staff. Throw in the live local, traditional folk music which was enjoyed and danced to by the local youth, and it was a great evening.

Perhaps i should also mention that we are in our 50s, were twice as old as almost everyone else there, but we weren't made to feel in the least out of place.

We were delighted to have this this cozy and comfortable restaurant recommended to us by the locals (Ala means "Cave" in Latvian). There is a large variety of beer, and the waitstaff was very helpful making recommendations. The food is wonderful and very reasonable. The chef works hard, and the presentation of the food is lovely. Potato Pancakes were the the best we had on our entire trip. We also had the pork chops, and the Catch of the Day was delicious. Ala is definitely worth looking for!

The club is in a cellar/basement in the Old Town. The staff are friendly, very helpful & some speak english. Order your drink & food at the bar & sit where you can! The place is busy, full of a young incredibly well-behaved latvian crowd letting their hair down. The beer & food are incredibly cheap, & surprisingly well-presented & tasty. Expect to wait up to an hour for your meal at dinner. Sit back, enjoy your beer & fried garlic bread, listen to traditional folk music, & watch as young ordinary latvians throw themselves in to their folk dance with a quiet pride & rhythm. The sorrel soup, & chicken liver with vegetables is tasty & filling. The menu has a decent selection of rustic hearty fare. All in all, an enjoyable experience of Latvia.
