Lovely staff, lovely ambience and the best soup ever tasted. - so good we had to return so that my friend could try it. Pistachio, celeriac cream soup, with venison strips and truffle oil. Delicious! My friend also judged her steak as superb , my duck was just short of perfect.

A lovely chic restaurant in the old town of Riga...
Looks old and classy from inside.
I tried the "Sturgeon and salmon borsch" and it was the best I ever had in my life.
The "Baltic plaice fillet with Thailand beans fried in butter and almonds" was less than what I expected.
The "Chocolate Fondant with vanilla ice-cream and glazed cherries" was a great dessert...

Some of the guidebooks to Riga can be positively off-putting when it comes to making general remarks about Latvian cuisine - "not for the weight-conscious", "pull out your pocket defibrillator and prepare to get greasy", the implication being that you will be in for pig and potato overload. One or two of the places off Doma Laukums look only too ready to conform to this stereotype. What a relief, in the circumstances, to find 1221.

The exterior is modest but colourful and slightly quirky and immediately draws one in. The menu outside barely mentions pork at all, and suggests that an imaginative hand will be at work with the ingredients. Inside is full of little nooks and corners each with three or four tables. There is a skylight to counteract any tendency to gloom. I ate the Baltic standby of herring with boiled potatoes and cottage cheese, and it was light and agreeable, the herring not too aggressively briny. Baltic plaice with what were called Thailand beans followed this, and although the beans looked like scarlet runners to me it made an ideal light supper dish. My wife had a smaller appetite and only ate a dish of pelmeni, but had no complaints. A tall glass of Valmermuizas beer washed it all down. Latvian beer is mostly good, a far cry from the sort of gutless lager that goes through the body without undergoing any discernible change.

Since I was in Riga I had to order a glass of Black Balsam with my coffee; bit medicinal, but not disagreeably so, and the waiter swore that it would do my blood pressure no end of good. In his enthusiasm he brought my wife a glass of the blackcurrant version on the house.

We were impressed enough to go back for lunch a few days later. The food was just as imaginative, but I was the teensiest bit underwhelmed by the salmon and sturgeon borshcht, chunks of fish and vegetables in a rather watery broth. Beaver marinaded in champagne with pineapple and goats cheese tortellini was rich and gamy and sweet, a good deal heavier than the dishes we'd had on the previous occasion, maybe something for an evening meal rather than a lunch but well worth trying. The menu strays into ambiguity here; there ought to be a semi-colon after 'pineapple', for the tortellini only contain goat's cheese, while the pineapple appears in chunks in the casserole.

Well worth a visit, and not outrageously expensive. Probably the best meals we had in Riga. Prompt service and a faultlessly Anglophone waiter.

Although the restaurant looks small, it has at least 4 floors, and a roof, so there is lot's of space. We sat outside, but it looked very cosy inside. The food was very good, the service attentive. A bit expensive but it was worth it. Some interesting things on the menu. Considered to go back the next day to eat lunch, but we did not have enough time after all.

Definitely, to eat in Riga is almost always a good experience!
This reastaurant is a very nice spot for dining, the environment is really nice, on several floors of an old house downtown.
Food is also well deserving a visit, and wine list as well.
