One of the best features of this museum is that your museum ticket can be used to translate the display descriptions into one of seven languages. The museum has interactive exhibits as well as static exhibits. One room has a chronological time line of Estonia that allows a visitor to open a panel and see more details of that particular time. Besides the main part of the museum, there are two other separate exhibits. One focused on the events leading to Estonia’s re-independence and the changes to the nation and the other is a walkthrough of the Finno-Uralic people. One should budget a half day to for this museum.

We were visiting with a group of 30 people from Belgium (ages between 15 and 81 years old) and everybody thought it was great. You can spend several hours there. No Flemish language available but English, French, German, ..;

The exhibition is huge. It takes easily three hours to go throuhg the museum. The building itself is interesting as is the location of the museum. It’s build on a Soviet era military airstrip.

Two permanent exhibits. One is on the various small Finno-Ugric subgroups, including Estonians and (I did not know this) Sami (sometimes called Lapps). The other is post-independence Estonia, including the Soviet occupation. Estonia will remind you often about the Soviet period.

Forty minute walk from downtown.
