“Good location, good for old school charm”
Reviewed October 22, 2013

I stayed at the Barclay for two nights in October 2013. You can tell it was fitted out in the 1990s and hasn't had much done to it since - but that doesn't matter as everything is clean, well maintained, and done properly in the first place. Third floor room was spacious, nice big bathroom, didn't test the jacuzzi. Breakfast was.... well, it was perfectly fine, but you know how sometimes in the Nordic and Baltic countries they make an honest attempt at a US/UK-style cooked breakfast, but you try it and wish they hadn't?

In the evenings the breakfast room is the Neljapäev fish restaurant (hence the fishing nets and seashells on the table at breakfast, nice touch...) - which provides room service, and the menu is hilarious for its honesty about not knowing exactly what is in the soup (see photo).

For history nerds, this building was a local Soviet military headquarters during the occupation. Which is fine... but there's a big plaque outside the front door in Estonian, English and Chechen commemorating the fact that Dzokhar Dudayev worked there. Personally, I'd keep quiet about that.

Overall - good value, comfortable stay, can't fault it. With the one exception that it would be nice to have sheets that actually fitted the mattress, instead of that weird thing they do with one sheet on the top half of the mattress and the other on the bottom half. Surely it can't be that hard?

Views from the hotel are to the park in the city center and opposite to the old church hill.
The hotel is in walking distance of the Tartu bus terminal. Parking area in front of the hotel.
The rooms in the third floor are nice, in the 5th floor it is very noisy (from rooms next door, due to the wooden floor you can hear every step),
Staff is very helpful. Breakfast could have more variation......

I booked a double room to be used as a single and was given a single room on the top floor(this may or may not have been the fault of the hotel as it was booked through a third party). The hotel's public rooms were pleasant and the breakfast was ok .The room was clean but that is the only good thing I can say about it.Where do I start? The shower was fine in itself but was impossible to use without flooding the whole bathroom floor and had a curtain which,as they do,moved round me whilst in use.Not very pleasant. The sink had no plug. The bed had a mattress with a smaller, thinner thing on top which moved whilst using it.The bed was tricky to access as it was under the sloping ceiling. The hotel seemed to have no central heating and the room was heated by a small electric(I assume) heater whose controls were impossible to access as it was under a dormer window in a small alcove. When I returned to the hotel at the end of the afternoon the room had not been cleaned as the hotel policy was not to clean a room if the key was not left at the hotel. They did send a maid to do it.I have stayed in hotels throughout Europe and North Africa for the last thirty years and can categorically state it was the joint worst room I have stayed in during that time.

No blackout curtaains, no air. Sun woke meump early everyday. I didn't slept at all during my stay. Didn't have the best beds. Had good location, but I wouldn't stay there again. My room was hot and sunny at 3:00 am.

This place is very close to the Old Town and is probably the most centrally located hotel in Tartu. The staff were friendly and helpful. The room was clean and comfortable. We were at the back of the hotel overlooking a green hill. The buffet breakfast was fine with plenty of choice. I would have preferred freshly cooked eggs to ones that had been standing in a warming container for a while. We were in Tartu during the singing festival, so the room rate seemed a little high compared to the other hotels we stayed in on our Baltic tour. Here's an important tip for Tartu. Take mosquito repellant. There were loads of these insects flying around all day long and we were bitten to death! We asked one of the local residents about them, and apparently they are an ever-present nuisance. I am not sure which months they are most common. But in June, they are all over the place....and all over you too! You can't go wrong if you choose the Barclay. It's not luxurious, but it is clean and comfortable.

It's located in the very heart of the Old downtown of Tartu, just few meters from the Town hall.
That's the best part of the hotel.
It's clean but quite basic - all furniture and decoration is cheap. The room however was not too small but the bed was. As I booked a room for single occupancy it might have been just kind a single room. If it would have been for double room it would have been pretty tight to sleep in that bed.
The scandinavian breakfast was better then expected and the hotel also has a lobby bar and a fish restaurant.
However if you just need to sleep overnight, don't seek for luxuory and would rather stay in the medieval downtown it's the most affordable option.

Tartu has small nice city center and the hotel is just few meters from that. That makes the good location, but the room was small with not so good disposition.
