“Excellent location in Old Town”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 13, 2013

Hotel located within walking distance to major Tartu attractions, shopping malls etc.
We stayed in a Superior room on the 4th floor, room 401 - twin beds. Room rate including breakfast 99 Euro. There was no neighbor room, so we had that little corridor to ourselves which was perfect - nice and quiet. The room was in 1800 century style with pink flowered wall paper - very romantic style.
When you make your booking be sure to include breakfast - it was really good. They even offered champagne for the Sunday breakfast ! We didn't try that...too early for us. In addition to the breakfast buffet you could order from an additional Ala carte menu.
The service was good and the staff was very friendly and spoke excellent English.

Room Tip: Ask for 401 if you want a quiet room with one next to.

We booked 2 nights in a superior double room, including breakfast for 2 nights over the internet using the hotel website. Emails were promptly answered.

Arriving by train from Latvia, the walk to the hotel took about 15 minutes from the station. Check in was easy and efficient.

Deciding to eat dinner at the hotel restaurant, a table was booked for us. The restaurant is in the basement, where breakfast is also served. Its a lovely, elegant area.
Our meal and the service of it was wonderful.
Breakfast was also impressive. There is a buffet type choice but also freshly cooked items, meaning food is not sitting in those horrible bain maries, slowly stewing!

We arranged for laundry to be done. Its a same day service well presented and at a reasonable price.

There is an elevator which I think serves all floors.

We were allocated Room 204, which was excellent. The windows, double glazed, overlook the university. Its a beautifully appointed room with plenty of space. The ensuite also is gorgeous, and the shower one of the best we encountered. Plenty of toilettries. The a/c system is quiet, not interrupting sleep. The bed was large and very comfortable.
Wifi access is free and fast. There is a safe and a mini bar.

We found all the staff we encountered unobtrusive and very professional. We were impressed!

We consider Hotel Antonius the best whilst we were travelling this time.

Beautiful small hotel in an old building close to the town square. I stayed in the de luxe room on the ground floor. Large and with a unique feel. No view, though. Mattress slightly on the soft side. Internet connection was included in price and was very fast. Only small complaint in that the plumbing of an old building makes sometimes roudy noises when someone upstairs uses their bathroom.
The reception staff attitude and service was absolutely impeccable, 5 stars. Same goes for the cleaning ladies. The service during breakfast left a little wanting, hence only 4 stars for the entirety. Breakfast choices were a bit limited as you would expect in a small hotel, but the quality of the food was very good.

This Hotel was fantastic and should be a model for others to go by. Our deluxe room was stunning, the bed heavenly and the service from the Hotel staff was impeccable. The bathroom was large, with a full size bath. The shower tended to flood the bathroom floor a bit due to its design but that's probably why there were two bath mats provided. The hotel bar area and restaurant featured some beautiful antique furniture. The location is good, just opposite the university and very close to the main square.
The restaurant dinner was divine and the young dinner waitress was a true professional, the best we have experienced in any restaurant. Breakfast was also very good, with a range of freshly cooked eggs and pancakes available.
In my view this is a truly excellent Hotel and I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Tartu.

Room Tip: If your budget permits treat yourself to a deluxe room and have dinner in the hotel restaurant

It may have been the room we had or our taste but cannot see this being a 5* rating. Its probably a 3.5. It has a very good location. Reception was quick, polite and friendly. The building looks good. Inside, if you like flowery, chintzy dark decoration, you will like it but I prefer something lighter and more contemporary. We had booked a superior room and although it was big, it was on the ground floor overlooking the internal restaurant courtyard so when in your room, people at tables a matter of feet away so intrusive and noisy. It is also near the small bar area they have and although not a rowdy bar, still get some noise. We also had strange intermittent noises from something in the water pipes above our room that late at night or early in morning are annoying. It was a fairly dark room. Cleanliness was very good. Not keen on the wet room style shower, just makes the whole bathroom wet and slippy. Breakfast was OK but nothing special. The website mentions valet parking but does not tell you they charge. The paperwork in the room says its free, but they charge. If I go to Tartu again, would probably try a different hotel.

Room Tip: Room 102 was not great

We were in Tartu for a visit at the University and stayed in a suite 1 nights and everything was just perfect. The personnel was extremely service-minded and helpful with everything. The room was beautiful, clean and very well equipped (including safety box) with comfortable beds. The restaurant served excellent a la carte dinner and the breakfast was good and with a wide choice (even sparkling wine!).
The location is perfect as it is in the city centre and right in front of the university.
