Like in so many other cities a industrial block in Tartu has been changed and is still changing into a trendy complex with small artisan boutiques, special shops, restaurants etc. Aparaat is one of them and at least now very popular: all the tables reserved and full on a normal Monday night. The interior is a mixture of previous functions and light furnishing.
The waiters/waitresses were all very young, many of them probably university students on holiday working, but notwithstanding it the service was quite professional.
The menu is moderate, lots of vegetables, burgers, Mediterranean flavors. They have also bread from the next door shop where they sell well known delicious Muhu bread.
The prices are at least now very, very moderate - 13 € for a two dish supper incl. a glass of white wine and a bottle of mineral water.

For our visit to Tartu after 5 years we wanted to try something new. The aparaaditehase -factory area sounded interesting. When we arrived to the courtyard, there was local folk dance and youth choir performing with contemporary twist. Excellent start for our diner.
The restaurant was busy at Saturday night, so book a table. Good menu with very reasonable price even for Tartu. The mains were disappointment, but the excellent starters and the blue cheese cake made up for it very well! Wine list was also adequate and for very good price.
They also serve lunch for very cheap price.

In the moment I saw the place I knew we will like it and I was not wrong. Waitress was so nice and suggested some of the best beers ( we had trouble choosing as we did not know any of the named). Also we ordered pork burger. Food was great but aside of that the atmosphere was just what I was looking for. Industrial buildings, creative design.. yes I wanted it more than just a fancy place in old town. Definitely worthwhile to take a walk to this place. Prices are reasonable, You don't just pay for food. You pay for great time and delightful atmosphere.
We had some problems finding the location, but it was only because we put too much trust in google maps.. it simply took us few streets further.
In conclusion - I really suggest it! Plus, there is also a terrace!

If you want to try something which is slightly different from the old town restaurants it is worthwhile to take the 20 minute walk to Aparaat. The restaurant within the old factory setting was quite busy on Thursday but having made a reservation we didn’t have to worry about having to walk back to the old town without having enjoyed an excellent meal. The menu provided enough choices even for our daughter and her vegan diet and we were all pleased with our choices which included beetroot carpaccio and pork as starters and a mushroom dish and fish as main courses. The service was friendly and the place had a nice relaxed atmosphere. So I suggest you take the walk to Aparaat and enjoy the excellent food and walking to Aparaat from the center also gives you a chance to see parts of Tartu you easily miss if you just hang around the center of the old town.

Near Hector and a significant church but inside a nondescript office block & courtyard it's part of great community of designers, baker, bar and small indie boutiques.

Food great, reasonably priced, as is the alcohol, great buzz. bright staff.
Not for the old at heart.
