originally booked the hotel portus because it said it was opposite the ferry terminal (and it was) however it was overbooked so we were sent to hotel bern, seems this may be a regular thing reading other reviews. they paid the taxi fare and it was a bit of a result it was a very nice hotel just on the edge of the old town, we thought the room and bathroom were good breakfast had most things you would need all in all very good.

Room Tip: we stayed on the ground floor (only two) had no problems, no noise from other rooms or outside

Booked the hotel way in advance. On arrival, they have "a problem with the reservation." They had the reservation but not the room. Another couple arrived at the same time as we did and we were both sent to the Palace Hotel. The staff at Bern assured us it was a fine hotel comparable to the Bern in rooms and location. We are at the Palace (rated #50), and they don't have air conditioning. The room is hot. The Bern reservation system is the problem and putting us at the palace only makes it worse.

Dear guest,

I am truly sorry about the incident!

This is something that should not be allowed to happen, but since you have travelled a lot of times you probably know by now that at some unfortunate times these kinds of issues come up. We did the best we could to find you an accommodation in the same scale of value and quality and it is sorry to hear that you were not pleased.

I hope you can accept our apologies!

Sincereley,
Terje Taal

A slightly odd title you may think, but here we go.

I wanted to go to Tallinn, never been there before, and according to various sources, having a hotel on the cusp of the old city is a very good idea. Sure, there's more to Tallinn than the old parts, but on a two day first visit, that's where you want to go. So, I shopped around a bit and found this hotel.

I chose it because it was on a direct route to the old eastern city gates from the ferry harbour (I arrived by ferry from Helsinki). It is near the buss terminal underneath the nearby shopping center (for my excursions to the eastern parts of Tallinn) and finally, it had a very fair price, and people on Tripadvisor seem to like it a lot.

Now, this is not shangri la or anything. It is actually on first inspection a bit dull and odd, with a less than inviting entrance stuck on the back passage of a beer hall. But once you get passed that and walk up to the concierges desk you are greeted by sweet, service minded girls, who are well informed, speak good English and have heaps of ideas about what you can do in Tallinn (that alone is more or less worth it all to me). The rooms are small, bit dull, somewhat dated, but I don't care, I don't go on my journeys to explore hotel rooms. As long as I don't get mange, there's free internet, the tv works (with at least one English speaking channel) and the room is clean, I don't give a toss if the room look like it was featured in an episode of Starsky & Hutch.

Another feature was the air con, which worked, and I was very pleased, as Tallinn was quite warm!

My room did face out to the back passage, and I was bothered a bit by late night arrivals and people coming and going (in and out of that beer hall it seemed), but, yeah, I don't want to drag things down over that.

All in all, I had such a great stay, the place did what I wanted, and everyone working here were really nice, service minded and, well, just very sweet. I suggested maybe throwing out one or two Russian and German tv channels and having something for us Scandinavians (I'm Norwegian, but Swedish is just fine), as it seemed there were quite a few of us around.

So, to wrap up: Close to everything. Great staff. Very fair price. Slightly dated and oddly placed, but clean and just what you need.

Room Tip: A room that doesn't face out to the courtyard/back passage, entrance part..

The room decor and carpet are dated but if you don't care about that, great location, good price, very helpful front desk and above average breakfast. Stayed 2 nights. Short trip from train station and walked to everywhere in Old Town and beyond. Definitely recommend.

I stayed here for one night with my husband - nice, clean hotel with friendly service. The rooms are a bit small, but clean and comfortable - the best bed I've had in a hotel for a long time.

I will definitely use this hotel again - maybe not for a family trip because of the small rooms, but for a city vacation without children or a business trip.

I have to say that it is rather difficult to categorize this hotel, because in my opinion this is not a luxury category hotel (as it appears in Tripadvisor as the sixth ranked luxury hotel in Tallinn), but it is definitely above the average or basic three-star level. I would have hoped to find a decent toilet kit in the room, including nice conditioner for hair, shower cap, body lotion etc. - because the rooms are provided with ropes and slippers, I somehow expected also to have these in the room. Maybe this would be the final small touch to bring some extra luxury to this otherwise very nice, small hotel. However, the hotel definitely offers great value for money.

Location - the best - within 5 minutes of walking distance you have the old town square, popular Venus club , lots of restaurants, late night ones too, and a supermarket too in case u need any utilities.

Service - par excellence, absolutely brilliant, dedicated, well informed reception staff , always with a smile and keen to help you out . You could ask them about anything in town and they would have all the information.
They are a terrific three - Kerste Melissa and Kris - especially Kerste. She has so much knowledge with the right attitude .

Decor - the hotel facade is a bit unassuming but the rooms were spotless.
No issues with wifi, free 24 hour access to library and business center.

Breakfast - was pretty good , with selection of usual continental stuff. Again, the service was good, they would pack it for you if u r leaving early and they kept refilling and never had to wait or inform anyone for more stuff.

Value for money - definitely, for all the above reasons, its rightly priced and they deliver a stellar service.

Suggestions - probably the " decor of the corridors " is a bit bland and the uniform of the staff - definitely could make it more trendy than the current supermarket look..
