So Tallin - Estonia. It was a birthday celebration trip, but a special birthday. I wanted to go somewhere i had never been before and the trip was a present from my partner. So, we decided to go to Tallinn as we like architecture, places with atmosphere / history and importantly good food and wine. Towns interest us during Winter and early Spring. For this purpose we try and find a Hotel as central as possible as our base.

The Merchants House Hotel cannot be more central - a matter of a few yards away from the main old town square. The Hotel is a combination of two old houses, with wooden beamed ceilings and some antique furniture in the rooms. The rooms look out over a central courtyard. Prior to the trip the manager reccomended restaurants and even made the booking for us.

We were met personally at the door and taken to the room after the usual registraion. The staff were extremely polite and helpful. Infact when calling at reception the Receptionists would often stand smartly to attention if they had been sitting down, almost military style - a bit unnerving at first - but a courtesy which we found endearing! The Hotel Manager also made a special kindly concession as it was a special visit. The room was very comfortable, a seperate bedroom on a split level, sofas and chairs, two Televsions - infact all amenities were available including a mini-bar.

Breakfast was a combination of the usual type of buffet but you could also choose a cooked breakfast of choice. The coffee was excellent and the food very good. The Hotel also has its own Ice Bar - drinks are served in ice moulded glasses. This is an interesting novelty and if you've never drunk Vodka out of an ice glass give it a try. The trick is to drink the vodka before the glass melts.

I don't think there was anything else we would have wanted, impossible to fault and I would highly reccomend the Merchants House Hotel to anyone visiting Tallinn, who would like to stay at a central location in a Hotel which has character and charm and with staff who go the extra mile to make sure your stay is a happy one. We stayed 3 nights and it was great. Definitely a Hotel for your short list.

Stayed 4 nights on mix of business and leisure. Feb is a relatively quiet time and hotel about 50% occupancy. Had an upgrade to a suite that included its own sauna. Hotel is perfectly situated only a few steps from the main town square. Old city very compact so able to walk to all places of interest. Streets are well maintained to keep them clear of heavy snow during winter and all so cold that snow remains "squeaky" and walkable with ordinary but warm shoes. Hotel opposite a small brewery/beer house/restaurant, which is fine. Hotel room was large as was bathroom and included a sauna, which was great. Small grumble was no tea/coffee making facilities in room. Reception staff unfailingly helpful and welcoming. breakfast mix of self service and to order - plenty and good quality. We ate in hotel 1 night (only us) in vaulted cellar area but food was fine and reasonable, adequate quality rather than anything special (we had house special of schnizel, which was a flattened chop rather than Austrian style). Hotel is a higgledy-piggledy style and interesting and well fitted. Lounge and bar where in evening can sit next to log fire but again quiet in Feb. Hotel can arrange taxi to airport which we did and was far cheaper than inward taxi we caught at airport as drivers still inflate prices. Tallinn prices are not always cheap but some very good restaurants among the tourist traps where even there the experience is still fine.

Dear Sir,

Thank you very much for your comments about your recent stay at the Merchants House Hotel, Tallinn Estonia. I appreciate you taking the time to write your experience about Tallinn and the time with us.

I would just like to remark that the Merchants House Hotel does offer tea & coffee facilities, but this service is offered on request at reception, tel extension nbr 500. This is due to insurance reasons (making boiling water), This is noted in the guest directory. I will however review this though and look to make this more visible for guests.

I am glad you enjoyed your stay at the Merchants House & Tallinn and please do not hesitate to contact me directly next time you come back to Tallinn.

Yours sincerely

I have just returned from a 5 night break at MHH in Tallinn with a friend. We had a fantastic time here and cannot recommend this hotel highly enough for a relaxing, centrally located city break! The hotel is literally a few steps from the main town square and very convenient for all the sights.
The hotel was smart without being too formal. The staff were extremely helpful and had a sense of humour - nothing was too much trouble. We asked for tea/coffee making facilities to be added to our room as this was not standard, and the necessary items were delivered to our room in less than 5 minutes at no additional cost!
The beds were comfortable, all linen changed and room cleaned thoroughly every day.
Our only suggestion when completing their satisfaction questionnaire, was that it was a huge bathroom with his & hers wash-basins, yet only had a bath with shower attachment on the taps - it would have been nice to have a walk-in shower or at least a shower screen and wall hook so you could stand to shower in the bath.
Wine was generally expensive in Tallinn restaurants and MHH was no exception with the cheapest bottle priced at £18, however this was a reasonable quality wine. There was a mini bar in the room which did not stock wine, but there was space in it to chill a couple of bottles from the supermarket if required!
We both agreed that Tallinn in the snow is even more picturesque than in the summer months. The snow literally sparkles as if there are crushed diamonds in it. The Old Town of Tallinn is also very peaceful in February with very few tourists which was good.
We had the choice of MHH or The 3 Sisters hotel when we booked - were we glad we chose MHH!!!! Word of warning.....DO NOT GO TO THE 3 SISTERS HOTEL UNLESS YOU ARE FEELING RICH!! The staff there are not as friendly and there is not the same relaxed atmosphere as at MHH.
Worse still, we had called in for a snack after a long walk and asked the waitress if we could order a bowl of soup each and a mineral water. She didn't show us a menu but said they had pumpkin soup which we ordered. The bill came to 470 EEK or approx £30 with tip, for 2 bowls of soup and 2 mineral waters!! A complete rip off even if they do have a high standard restaurant - we had an amazing entrecote steak with fries and trimmings at MHH for little more!!
We also had an evening at The Estonian National Opera House to see Swan Lake and the tickets were incredibly cheap in comparison to London prices for the very best seats -well worth a visit if you like a bit of culture!
Our advice is to stay at MHH for a memorable holiday!

Well placed location round the corner from the main square in the Old Town. Rabbit warren of bedrooms which was really interesting. Bedroom opening onto central courtyard. Well appointed with plenty of room and spacious bathroom with lovely toileteries. Good breakfast with H&C choices which set us up for the day. Friendly and efficient reception and restaurant staff. Synopsis of UK news produced for guests on a daily basis which was most welcome. Very convenient to a number of good bars and restaurants.

Had we known before we would have stayed longer. But we stayed there only one night. We had a suite for the price of a room. We went to the sauna (free). The service was fine as was the breakfast. I recommend that place.

We were a group of 6 girls visiting Estonia for our annual girly weekend away. The hotel had arranged a transfer for us which was ready and waiting when we stepped out the airport. We arrived at the hotel at midnight and were greeted by a friendly face at reception. Our rooms overlooked the courtyard and were each decorated differently but very tastefully. The bathrooms were huge and spotlessly clean. We did not hear any noise during our stay. On our first morning we had our breakfast cooked to order which was fantastic. It was served in the cellar which looked like you were in little igloos. The whole hotel was very quaint. On the other days it was a buffet breakfast which was not as good but still lots of choice and filling enough to keep you going until the evening. The staff were always friendly and helpful and arranged for a couple of us to have massages which were lovely. The hotel is in a fantastic location in the Old Town. Tallinn is very picturesque in the Old Town with lots of little shops, bars and restaurantsdown cobbled streets. The New Town is outside the Old Town walls and you will know you are there by the modern shops and lots of strip clubs!!, so Tallinn has something for everyone!! We visited at the beginning of the Christmas Markets which was a lovely sight although there wasn't anything different to buy from in the shops. Food and drink wasn't as cheap as expected but cheaper than home and most European cities.
All in all we had a great time in Tallinn and the hotel was fantastic value for money and lived up to our expectations.

Literally a stone's throw from the Market Place, an immaculate hotel with excellent staff for whom nothing was too much trouble. Very comfortable rooms with a huge bath in a huge bathroom: we loved the inclusion of older features, such as the stencilled ceilings, stained glass windows in the Ice Bar, the walls in the rooms and in the cellar where really sustaining (and healthy) breakfasts are served.
Gorgeous colour schemes and a very warm and kind welcome. We cannot recommend it too much: visit it now!
