Owner description: The 'Russalka' monument is a memorial in classic style to those who lost their lives on the Russian navy vessel of the same name. It is situated just opposite Kadriorg Park in Tallinn. The sculpture, created by Amandus Adamson in 1902, was placed by the sea where the promenade from Kadriorg Palace comes down to meet the Bay of Tallinn. The monument depicts an angel pointing an Orthodox cross in the direction of the sunken ship. Did you know...? *During the Soviet era the Orthodox cross was removed from the statue, which simply indicated the direction of the Russalka with its now empty hand

If you plan on spending more than two days in Tallinn, chances are you are going to run out of sights to see. When that time comes, grab a coffee and take a slow stroll (it’s not that far from the city center) over to this attractive monument. If you have a couple hours to kill, pair this with Kadroig Park, which is just a short walk away.

Lovely monument and it is in a great area for walks. We used Russalka as a landmark from where we always went to Pirita or Kadriorg park for walks and/or running from where we continued towards shoreline to the Marina. Lovely route for a nice walk combining woods and the beach.

Russalka is a conundrum; with a historic Russian monument taking pride of place on prime Estonian seashore.
The statue dates from 1902, and is a memorial to the sinking of the Russian Navy ship "Russulka", where 189 crew members perished in the freezing Baltic waters.
The name translates as "Mermaid"; and this fine statue mounted on an equally attractive base, in a small park area. This provides a great backdrop for photos, and as such is used by many brides for an outdoor location.
Perhaps it is the mermaid association that now is foremost in Estonian minds rather than the sad Russian connection. Either way it is a beautiful statue by Amandus Adamson, the view over Pirta / Tallin Bay is outstanding.
Amazingly my wife nearly stepped on a viper here.
Snakes, or not, it is worth stopping to view this piece of history.

We spent a lot of time at this monument and the beach besides it. It was the only highlight of our otherwise dull Tallinn trip. Got an opportunity to capture some beautiful pictures and play around at the beach. Also, rented a cart for a few minutes driving around the cycling track along the sea. It was good to be there for a couple of hours.

Couples love to visit Russalka during their wedding. A statue and a lovely view to Tallinn is all there is though. The traffic can be frustrating on Narva maantee, especially on rush hour.
