Estonia, like other Soviet occupied countries, was unable until recently to really support and foster an architecture field. Literally as soon as freedom was regained-they were off like a shot, and are now known throughout the world for their cutting edge modern architecture. They have only recently begun to combine historic preservation with modern architecture, but Rotermann City (the area next to the Museum) shows their success. As a Preservationist, I was SO impressed with the entire area-and with this museum. The models (and drawings in the basement) give a good overview of how architecture developed here, the limitations faced during the Soviet Occupation, and the astonishing work they have produced in the last 25 years. Well worth the short walk out of Old Town-actually seeing modern Tallinn is something everyone should do as well. Now-if the Museum (or an individual) would just start providing architecture tours beyond large groups!!

We stumbled across this place and were surprised it wasn’t better known. The highlight is the collection of architectural models on the ground floor, but there are other exhibitions throughout the building. Tallinn is full of interesting buildings; it’s a place where the ancient brushes shoulders with the modern. This museum presents the opportunity to explore the direction of Estonian architecture in more detail.
