As a resident of Old Town Tallinn, I get a lot of friends coming in for a day or two on cruise or holiday visits. I always take them on a walking tour of the Old Town and even if they only have 4 hours to spare, I make them trudge up the narrow limestone staircase of Oleviste Kirik. Even if the walk up and down can be intimidating or tiresome, the views are worth it. It is fun to point out the fortress walls and towers, look towards the port and beyond and point out other places of interest. You can take great photos and see early gothic construction from the inside out.

It is a hard slog to the top of the Church Tower to take in the magnificent views of Tallinn, but it is worth the 258 steps to get there and be rewarded with such a view of the whole of the city, its port and all the cities surroundings.
The parapet around the tower is very narrow and you if you don’t like heights then give it a miss as you will have to squeeze around the outside of the four corner pinnacle turrets at the base of the 63 metre spire that soars above you. It is safety fenced but you feel, “I hope nothing goes wrong up here!”

Situated on the corner of Lai and Oleviste, St. Olav's Church rises 123.7m above the city. 258 steps up sees you at 60m above street level, and at the top of Tallinn. Get some great 360 degree panoramic shots and regain your breath before whipping down the 258 steps back. Half the fun is telling the people that are going up, that they are almost at the halfway point (even though they have nearly reached the top)! Maybe not for the physically challenged. The tower and church is open every day between 10:00 and 18:00. Box office closes at 17:45. Cost €2 to climb up. Free to climb down.

The view from the tower was really nice and worth the climbing, which was a bit exhausting. It might have been good if there would've been some kind of warning for people with not so good health.

We didn't get inside the church because there was a wedding which is supposed to be quite common on weekends during the summer.

Definitely worth a visit!
