“Toomkirik Should Not Be Missed”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 22, 2012

Toomkirik is the oldest church in Tallinn as it was originally built in the 13th century. It is located on Toompea Hill near the Parliament and the Nevsky Cathedral. It became Lutheran in the 15th century, as the Lutheran faith has become one of the dominant faiths in Estonia. The inside is very simple (in my opinion what a church should be) and if you have the opportunity to look through the windows you will be treated to a fantastic view of the old town. If you are inspired by churches, Toomkirik is not to be missed.

We went into this church to shelter from the rain. It is a very old church which is visible from the inside with the old style of pews. There are a number of coat of arms on display on the walls of the church. There are tombs in the church as well. You can see some parts of the church for free but you have to pay to see the tombs etc.

“Cathedral, Please. Not "Dome Church."”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 16, 2012

First, please don't ask to see the "Dome Church." Nobody calls it that but misinformed English-speaking tourists who read misinformed guide books. That mistranslation goes back to bad Soviet-produced publications by translators who were denied access to current English materials and had to guess how to translate "Toomkirik" (a compound of two Estonian words borrowed from Low German Dom "cathedral" and Kirk "church"). In fact, "toomkirik" is simply the Estonian word for "cathedral." And "Cathedral" is the only word used by English-speaking guides and on the information plaque.

The Cathedral is worth taking time to visit. It is not ornate, nor impressively large. But it conveys a certain medieval/renaissance atmosphere and serenity. Particularly picturesque is its setting atop Toompea ("Cathedral Head," the name of the rocky mound on which Parliament and the castle stand), under linden trees in a cobblestone square. It won't take long to visit, but take the time to at least step inside.
