Owner description: This jumble of 14th- and 15th-century architecture with its medieval walls, needling spires and twisting, cobblestone streets is also the site of many of the city's important historic attractions and museums including the House of the Brotherhood of the Blackheads, St. Catherine's Guild and the 15th-century Guildhall that now houses the History Museum.

“Lots to see and take in on a full day visit”
Reviewed April 9, 2014

We visited Tallinn as a day tour from Helsinki - this gave us about six hours to take in as much as possible. There is so much to see including the wonderful architecture in general and in the churches specifically. Add to that a cornucopia of restaurants and cafés, souvenir shops (many selling similar products such as amber jewellery). We happened to visit on a Baltic cold April day which had its obvious disadvantages but on the plus side there were not too many tourists and hence it was pleasant moving around - we understand that during the summer months it is packed with tourists all jostling and in a hurry! A magnificent city and most certainly worth a visit.

No matter what the season or weather, this is like stepping back into the middle ages no matter what direction You are looking in. The only drawback is "souvenirs". Otherwise go and enjoy everything Tallinn has to offer. 3 days will do it

“Old Town Talinn”
Reviewed April 8, 2014

This is an interesting place to explore. There are beautiful buildings to see and shops that sell original items from local people. I found a beautiful pendant and some hand made Christmas ornaments which I collect. It is a fun place to walk around and look.

“Beautiful fairy tale town”
Reviewed April 6, 2014

If you're coming to Tallinn, the old town should be the first place on your list to head to.

Yes, it is a bit 'touristy', there are lots of souvenir shops, but it's easy to by-pass these and there are just as many beautiful shops selling origional craft work from local artists - such as glassware, quilts, ceramics, jewellery and hand painted silk etc. A good place to find this is down St Catherine's Passage, a picturesque old town lane thats home to the St Catherine's Guild, a collection of craft workshops where you can watch the artists work and buy their ware.

The winding cobblestone streets and colourful old buildings are just delightful and present some beautiful photo opportunities. If you're into photography I'd suggest coming early morning (but nothings open then) or late afternoon or (if you're here for a while and can be choosy) when it's a little overcast, because the sun casts huge dark shaddows over half the street during the middle part of the day. We arrived early, got some lovely shots while the place was deserted, then went off for lunch in the middle of the day before coming back that afternoon.

The town hall square shouldn't be missed, and make sure you wander the perimeter until you find the Town hall pharmacy. It's the oldest continuously run pharmacy in Europe and still has all the medieval remedies on display which is facinating.

We found the prices at cafe's in the old town to be pretty high, so if you're looking for somewhere lovely to go for morning tea or lunch with very reasonable prices, try walking out of the main gate and heading over to the Solaris Center (about a 7 min walk from the main gate). The cafe on the top level of this shopping center is called 'Komeet' (you can find it reviewed on trip advisor) and it has great food, AMAZING cakes (for about 4 euros a slice) good coffee and lovely views across to the old town.
