Owner description: This jumble of 14th- and 15th-century architecture with its medieval walls, needling spires and twisting, cobblestone streets is also the site of many of the city's important historic attractions and museums including the House of the Brotherhood of the Blackheads, St. Catherine's Guild and the 15th-century Guildhall that now houses the History Museum.

If you're thinking of doing a cruise or private tour company excursion of old town Tallinn, save yourself the money. This town is so easy to do yourself. The cruise ships berth very close to town (1/2 mile or so to the entrance gate at Fat Margaret tower). The old town is small and easily explored on your own. An excursion might give you a few facts and figures, but you can get that info on your own, and you'd probably forget it shortly anyway. An excursion might also give you an hour or two to explore on your own, but you're still on their schedule - you don't have to worry about a tour schedule when you're on your own. Just see everything at your own pace and walk back to the ship when you're ready. The Tallinn tourist office will send you a free map ahead of time. To help with suggestions for walking around I used a combination of the Rick Steves walking tour and a walking map from an individual who posted travel information on the web (brentjes.com).

What a wonderful place, full of history, culture and friendly people! Loads to see and do with shops , restaurants and bars a plenty. Some great hotels in the Old Town as well , we stayed at the Merchants House Hotel (see separate review).

Also one of the few places the Euro has not priced out of existence, prices on a par with the UK , not cheap but not the sky high ludicrous prices being charged in most of the Euro zone of death!

Thank Paul N

I first visited the Old Town of Tallinn 20 years ago shortly after the USSR breakup and Estonia declaring its independence. I was impressed with the walled city of Old Town then and am still impressed. Of course times have changed dramatically there are today many fine restaurants and shops as you can well imagine BUT not enough to classify as a "tourist trap". This was my 5th visit, this time with my wife and daughter and her friend, it is a place I especially wanted my daughter to see, my wife had been with me 3 times previously. It is a cruise ship stop so expect many tour groups in the Summer but few in September.

We rented some bikes right off our Windstar Windsurf ship and had a joyfilled time cruising all around Tallinn's old town. It was a sunday, so we took a picnic off our ship and enjoyed the sights and people watching as we burned our calories! The bikes were 'marine' bikes, really quite nice little bikes, easy to get around and ride.
