We came across this museum by chance. This gives a very detailed explanation of what the Estonian people suffered under Soviet Union. There are many stories from inmates - quite shocking. I would suggest to visit KGB prison first in old town then visit here. It is important that the world knows how the Estonian people suffered

Walk north of town through a neighborhood with some interesting buildings to this historical but closed site on the water's edge. You can walk around it and imagine the horrors of the past. It was used up to 1991 as a prison and place of torture. You can walk over from the seaplane harbor.

Unfortunately it's closed. The chances it will be open again seems to be very small. But it's a important piece of history that can't be vanished

PatareiPrison, Guest Relations Manager at Patarei Sea Fortress Prison, responded to this reviewResponded May 10, 2017

Well, information about Patarei being closed has been distributed to travel agencies as well as it is available at Patarei web site ever since last autumn. The web site information in turn is available over here.
We still hope we can make it available to public again one day, so we haven't removed the TripAdvisor listing yet.

The prison is closed, but you can still walk along the shore and take a peek inside and watch some cool graffiti, if you appreciate this kind of art.
