“Freaky but worth it”
Reviewed February 10, 2013

A tour to the Tallinn Prison is a must do when in town, go at night and when it is cold, adds to the atmosphere. Creepy how recently it was used and how horrific the stories are that come from there, worth the 9euros to see and experience first hand.

“Worth the money.”
Reviewed January 28, 2013

First I need to mention that I had unlimited time on my hands because I lived in Tallinn so maybe if you dont have unlimited time and you are not visiting Seaplane Harbour this prison might not be worth your time.
The entry is only 2 euros and worth the money. However you should strongly consider guided tour as there are no signs and information brochure also seems to lack much of the information I was looking for. Also they dont allow you to see the "shooting room" unless you have guided tour so there seemed to be whole right-wing of the prison closed to anyone without guided tour. I for one am thinking about taking guided tour (the last time I was on my own). I wonder if they could find anyone who actually did time there for some petty crime to give the tour (how cool would that be!!!).
Another con is the fact that the prison was really really hard to locate in the first place (and I was stupid enough to try to take alternative "short-cut" in the unknown neighborhood on my way out). So not only did I get lost trying to find that prison I also got lost trying to find my way back to the central city.

In short - entry is cheap and well worth the money, inside is pretty dark (bring flashlight), getting there is a bit complicated (also time-consuming and including a lot of walking), the inside of the prison is also dirty and some of the stairs in the yard dont seem to be the safest ones around and consider getting guided tour.

“For dark tourism enthusiasts”
Reviewed January 23, 2013

The only way to see this prison (at least during the winter season) is to organise/join a group tour. Our group went there during the full moon late in the evening and it was creepy. The prison is in a bad condition (and probably was so also when it was still in use a few years ago). The guides point out the torture and execution chambers. We spent quite a while hearing about the horrible conditions of the inmates in one of the cells. It is a must see sight, gives you an idea what life was like back in the Soviet times in Estonia. You did not have to kill anyone to end up there, just have the wrong views. There is also a place commemorating the many Jews killed there, as well. You can walk there from the harbour and old town, but during a windy day it can be torture, too. Public transport does not serve the area that well. Taking a taxi there is a good idea, if you don't feel like walking 2 km...but make sure you have a taxi number to call back when you've finished the tour. Not a nice visit, but a very interesting one. If you collect dark tourism places, this is one to add to your list.

“A great escape”
Reviewed January 19, 2013

We were set up with a spectacular show, being "caught" and "interrogated" by KGB look-alikes managing to give us a hint of the terror and fears of the former inmates in this prison ruin. Only negative side was the freezing cold (though probably better that on a hot summer day). This frightening place with its incredibly rough conditions for prisoners gives a serious setting for understaninding more of the oppression under the Soviet occupation.

“Easily accessible by bike”
Reviewed January 14, 2013

If the weather is nice, rent a bike a go here. As this place has not yet been restored, past times' inhumane crimes come creaping here.
