Owner description: In Soviet time Hotel Viru was good enough to accommodate foreigners. It also had to be good enough for the KGB ... The museum represents a collection of the stories of two worlds. In one of them, mostly existing on paper, happy Soviet people enjoyed a life of plenty and friendship, led by a single wise political party. The other world – the real one – had a nature much more diverse and complicated.

We very much enjoyed our pre-booked tour of the KGB Museum in Tallinn. I must echo other reviews and agree that the tour guide was what made the visit so intriguing.

We took some gret pictures of Tallinn frm the top floor of the hotel durnig our visit.

It only took an hour or so, but worth a visit when in Tallinn.

First you must understand that that my family went to Russia as invited guest in 1971 & 1973 because my father (an ob/gyn) was teaching the Russian doctors how to deliver babies with a lower mortality rate. So we experience first hand the spying the KGB did in our hotel room in both Moscow and Leningrad. Everything the story tellers (better than calling them tour guides because they really aren't tour guides) on your tour say is factual. Back in 1973 we joked about our TV having a BUG planted in it and the next morning when we came back from breakfast it was gone!!! While everything was very accurate i will say that this "tour' could have been so much better with a little effort. I still recommend it and for those who are intrigued about how the KGB spied on foreign dignitaries it will be worth your while. Just don't expect a Russian version of the James Bond museum.

Get a guided tour and ask questions. Put yourself in the time and place - not long ago to get a taste of living under the Soviet system.

The museum isn't so much of a museum in the true sense of the word, but a tour of some rooms that were once occupied by the KGB in the Viru hotel, on the secret floor of the hotel.
The tour guide was very informative and made the tour worth while. She told lots of interesting stories about the KGB era in Estonia and what went on in the hotel during this time.
The main room that you are shown has some remnant listening devices and other bits and pieces. After the main tour, there isa short 10 min documentary of the history of the Viru hotel which is not related to the KGB history but more about the hotel being built etc.
Cost was €8 pp or €6 if you are staying at the hotel.

Small museum. not so much to see more to hear the stories the guide told us. A part of estonian history.
